a fuel tanker with 8500 gallons of gas ran into a semi truck under the I-95 at Exit 15 overpass in Norwalk, Connecticut ... shutting down the interstate in both directions for days as the overpass steel was damaged and the pavement on the 95 was too, from the heat of 3 hours of burning gas

Traffic was backed up for dozens of miles during the morning rush hour, and the crash left other highways and secondary roads in gridlock. The major alternate route in the area, the Merritt Parkway, cannot be used by trucks because the underpasses on that highway are too low.

The tanker ignited directly underneath the bridge structure,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “The steel did begin to overheat and warp.”

Last fall, the state Department of Transportation replaced a nearby portion of I-95 that carried traffic over a local road in Westport. The sections were pre-built, allowing the bridge to be completed over two weekends.

  1. The cause of this is a driver in an automobile who swerved in front of the flatbed truck, which then maneuvered and hit the tanker. The driver is alive and I trust he has been tested for alcohol aa recreational substances. 160,000 vehicles a day passthrough this area on I-95!

    1. yeah, I read the cause... and I just didn't mention it, it's not much to learn about unless there's a scandalous reason that crash happened, or a heroic avoiding running over a baby on the freeway.
But that an interstate will be closed in both directions, for days, is big news.
A similar fire on a free way happened in LA a couple years ago, and the highway was similarly badly damaged.
