Proof that eventually, with enough banging, someone will hear the noise and decide to solve the problem. They are finally going to raise the 11'8" rail road bridge so morons will quit driving trucks into it


For years now, the “11 Foot 8 Bridge” in Durham, North Carolina has been in videos across the internet for shaving the tops off trucks and trailers. Some even know it as “The Can Opener”.

The city’s transportation department Tweeted out that it will be closing down the area to raise the bridge eight inches to a new total of 12 feet and four inches in the next few weeks.

  1. Pro: Fewer morons will have to pay for the damage they do to rental trucks, fewer aircon units will be scraped off oversize RVs, and fewer emergency vehicles will be called to deal with the carnage.

    Con: The projected cost of raising the bridge is $500,000, and an endless source of amusement will go from a steady stream to a mere dribble. Though I'm sure there will still be somebody in a 13' tall truck that will ignore all warnings....

  2. Look up the Onondaga Parkway bridge in Syracuse and see how many times that sob has been hit. Two to three vehicles a year and a few years back a double decker tour bus hit it with people on the top killing several people. There's a sign that says 10' 9" with multiple flashing warning lights and somehow some idiot seem to find it

  3. 12 feet 4 inches still wont clear a normal truck !

    maybe they are then going to dig out the road and lower it the rest of the way to make the clearance 13' 6" ?

    1. I didn't dig into the story any deeper (no pun intended) to get information on what an appropriate clearance would be, who ascertained that whatever they are going for would be based on what, etc etc.
      Maybe they have a good idea, finally, or, maybe they are just going to screw it up and waste time and money on some half ass solution
