What's the right thing to do when you see a kitten or puppy on a road, or a bridge? Does insurance cover the smashed up car of the person that panic stopped to rescue it? Or does car insurance not cover stopping in the lane, where there is no shoulder, and morons driving into it because they don't know how to use their brakes?

Somebody driving across the bridge spotted a flash of orange fur on Tuesday morning, and the animal lover got out to save the 10 week old kitten, according to the Coronado Police Department.

While the fearless animal lover was attempting the rescue, however, their car was hit from behind by a red sedan, that was hit by another car

  1. Not necessarily an easy question, as a human's life is considered more important than that of an animal. Thankfully it appears that there was only material damage (and damn, that kitten is cute), but the animal lover in question should know that traffic on that is compromised by an unknown number of morons driving there too.

  2. As for insurance and the law if you run into a car in front of you that has slowed or stopped it's your fault. Driving too fast for conditions or unable to maintain control of your vehicle. I'm sure there are exceptions.

    1. Not quite. Car drivers who get rear ended also risk higher insurance premiums, because the accident might have happened because of that driver's not quite predictable actions - like going forward at a stop sign, immediately regretting it and then stopping again. Same thing goes for more extreme cases like idiots brake checking other cars (and trucks (HA!)).

In theory everybody should be keeping a long distance to the car ahead, and constantly be on high alert, but I doubt many people drive like that, especially in congested traffic condition. You rely quite a lot on other drivers' predictable behavior.
