Might be "lovebugs" in florida. Ive hit swarms of them and had to stop the truck and scrape off the windshield. they are really soft and splatter easily.
Bet he was glad to be wearing a helmet! Back when I was a bus driver, I was on I-5 coming thru Stockton California and could see something hovering over the freeway in front of me. A second later I hit a swarm of bees which splattered all over the windshield. I had to pull over and clean off the glass before I could continue.
