the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight planes, five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a Dakota and two Chipmunk aircraft, are kept airworthy for displays and commemorative events using tech manuals dating back to 1945, which assumed levels of knowledge and experience that were no longer taught.

The aircraft are flown by regular and reserve RAF aircrew between May and October, and about 40 engineers and technicians at Coningsby help keep them operational.

Taylor said engineers had to refurbish original components or work with specialist manufacturers to produce new ones – a process that can take months.

"We've had to have wheels made for a Lancaster because they don't exist anymore," he said.

a search for airworthy Douglas DC-3s to photograph has grown into a worldwide research project, aviation photographer Rene Ligon has documented nearly 600 surviving airframes

Ligon has now documented 657 surviving airframes, as of August 22, 2026.

To make the information manageable, he maintains two principal lists: one for aircraft that are airworthy or close to airworthy, and another for static examples.

The flying category also includes aircraft capable of taxiing and those being restored to airworthy condition.

wow, this is a lot of fire power at the ready, and ready to pop out of the plane when needed! The B-36 Peacemaker

For defense, early variants were equipped with six remotely operated retractable turrets and twin 20 mm cannons in both the nose and tail, giving a total of 16 guns.

Thank you George!

From 1959 to 1993, Larsen Park hosted three different retired Navy jets, each donated to serve as imaginative play structures for the children of the Parkside District. I love this stuff...

The first was a Grumman F-9 Cougar reconnaissance plane from Squadron VC-61, driven up from Moffett Field in Mountain View with the cooperation of the California Highway Patrol and all the police department jurisdictions in between.

The second jet, a Navy F-J Fury, replaced the Grumman in 1967. Both jets had ladders added to help kids climb into the cockpits.

The third, and perhaps best-remembered jet, as it occupied the park for eighteen years from 1975 to 1993, was an F-8 Crusader.

The idea for a new plane, is a larger concrete replica, that uses cargo netting for kids to climb on to represent the exhaust

The FAA now prohibits flight of MD-11 aircraft because it has "determined the unsafe condition is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same type design."

The FAA's emergency directive on Saturday prohibits flight of MD-11 aircraft because it has "determined the unsafe condition is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same type design."

And this is going to further delay cargo during holiday delivery, on top of the air traffic controllers problem

A serial of Douglas C-47 Skytrains of the 315th Troop Carrier Group, 1944, dropping 1st Polish Airborne Brigade into DZ "O" near Nijmegen in Holland, D+6 of Operation Market Garden.

The CG-4A Waco gliders on the ground were released 37 minutes earlier by the 313th TCG and 61st TCG (92 gliders between 1603 and 1610 hours).

Minutes following this drop, the 313th TCG and the 316th TCG released another 97 gliders.

On September 23, 42 aircraft of the 315th finally got off the ground from Spanhoe with 560 more paratroopers of the 1st Polish Brigade, and dropped on DZ "O". By then, however, Operation Market Garden had stalled and although a tactical gain was not to be made, the Brigade did manage to send some of their numbers across the river to reinforce the British paratroopers trapped in Oosterbeek, and secure a corridor for their eventual evacuation.

Polish Brigade casualties were for the operation were a devastating 25 percent. This photo was taken by an official US Army Combat Photographer on-scene during the drop.

( To the tune of "Do You Wanna Build A Snowman?" ) Do you wanna buy an airplane? Big Horn County, Wyoming, just wants these junkyard planes to GO AWAY. They've already been stripped of all the parts anyone needed

The auction is the product of a long legal battle. For years, salvage operator Harold Sheppard Jr. stored aircraft on leased airport land but failed to pay rent. The county filed a lien, the dispute went all the way to the Wyoming Supreme Court, and earlier this year the justices cleared the way for the county to take ownership. With that ruling, the airport finally had the green light to sell the hulks, recovering some costs and clearing space on its property.

The lineup includes multiple Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcars, Cold War–era twin-boom transports that later became tankers; three Boeing KC-97 Stratofreighters, classic piston-engine tankers derived from the C-97 and Stratocruiser family; and two Lockheed P2V-7 Neptunes, the maritime patrol planes that once patrolled oceans before being pressed into fire service. Other lots feature hulking fuselages of C-130B Hercules transports, Fairchild C-82 Packets, Martin 4-0-4 airliners, and Douglas C-54 Skymasters
