there is a very straight 11 mile stretch of freeway between Vegas and Pahrump, and it's by Spring Mountain race track. It's also going to host a land speed record attempt next Saturday.. Thanks Dennis!

Route 160, the main road from Las Vegas to Death Valley, annually handles an average of 1.7 million tourists.

SR-160 between Tecopa and Sand Valley roads will close from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Nov. 4-5 while Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg attempts to set the top speed for a production car. Traffic will be diverted for this event by NDOT.   Roadside parking, cyclists and pedestrians will be prohibited.

Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch will be hosting Koenigsegg to not only beat the current record of 268 mph from a production vehicle but to hold that record for the foreseeable future.

“The Swedish car company is a member of our club and this event will be costing them around $100,000 to shut down the highway and all the logistics, insurance and other things that went into this event,

We have received a temporary occupancy permit from the Nevada Department of Transportation to attempt a world speed record on a very straight section of highway, that is the main artery, connecting the rural community of Pahrump and Las Vegas together.”

There are two records that will be broken that day, the first being the 240 mph on an open public highway and the other being the 268 mph record for the overall top speed of a production car.

Racing legends Donnie Allison, Sid Collins, Roger McCluskey, Ed McCulloch, Augie Pabst, Bruce Penhall and Ed Winfield will be enshrined into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America when the organization stages its annual induction celebration on August 23 and 24, 2011 in Detroit.

Ed Winfield was regarded as one of the all-time great mechanical minds motorsports has ever known. He was an expert in engine design and carburation and played a major role in the development of the famed Novi engine with his brother, Bud. He is generally recognized as the “Father of the Racing Cam Business,” making his first performance camshaft in 1914 at age 13 and is credited with creative cylinder head designs and other engine advancements.

Incredible new cars

At full bore, the upcoming 1,001 horsepower Bugatti Veyron, meanwhile, burns through its entire fuel supply in a mere 12.5 minutes at full speed (253 mph) Which is good, because the tires will only last for 15 minutes at this speed. Convienent, No?

By the way, I worked out the fuel consumtion of my 69 Coronet R/T...
at a 1/8th mile race I made 4 passes...
grand total - 1/2 mile.
I went through 1/2 tank of 100 octane avgas (about 4 bucks a gallon).
Thats works out like this; 1/2 mile = 10 gallons = 36 seconds....
20 gallons (full tank) = 1 minute 12 seconds = 1 mile (this is all at wide open throttle)
Somehow this doesn't sem like it makes sense, but the fuel gauge and the time slips tell the story
9 second 1/8th mile too.
