for a good old fashioned simple weekend afternoon movie, with no new cars, just pre 1964 vehicles, with Rock Hudson directed by Howard Hawks, on Amazon Prime Video

a 1958 Chevy Delray

1959 Ford F100

I sure didn't expect to see an NSU Prinz in a Hollywood movie

the character Rock Hudson is playing works for Abercrombie and Fitch, back when it was a sporting goods store, and maybe it was paid product placement, but the 63 Jeep Wagoneer was a good choice

His character is required to enter a fishing tournament, and to use everything in the store.

nice little Honda 105 on the back

Fully loaded with all the neat camping stuff that 1963 could supply, all the classic good stuff

the AFC on the door is for Abercrombie and Fitch Company

the previous Honda 105, and a Honda Monkey

Standing ovation to John the Trans Am loving UPS man who was pivotal in rescuing a dog for a route customer in Malvern PA during the heatwave!

the old dog was stuck off a little cliff (probably chasing a groundhog) but he couldn’t get up and he was in the briars.

The customer had searched for 90 minutes, to find the stuck dog, her husband was unreachable, and enlisted the help of the local ladies walking by

But though they could cool the dog down with water, they hadn't yet removed him from the stuck location/situation.

That's about when the John the UPS man comes down the lane and sees the golf cart parked. He asked if he could help and he was able to lift the exhausted senior dog to the back of the golf cart and a quick ride to the shade and garden hose for cool down on the large scale.

UPS ought to do something cool for their MANY outstanding hero on the go types who happen to come by and do hero work... there are thousands of true stories like this

we've all wanted to do this... why the hell not as long as the traffic behind you doesn't mind?

a truckers preinspection saved a kitten's life!

A semi driver in Ohio was doing his pre-trip inspection when he discovered a kitten stuck in between the truck's tires.

It was decided to take off the wheels. As soon as the wheel was moved, the kitten was freed

Elvis bought Triumph motorcycles as gifts to each of the 9 members of his Memphis Mafia in 1965, so he and his closest friends could ride together in the hills of Los Angeles. (thank you Doug!)

Triumph Motorcycles has discovered something great, with the discovery of the original checks in the Graceland archives, signed by the man himself, as well as recollections from Jerry Shilling, a close friend of Elvis.

In June 1965, Elvis had been on the set of the musical ‘Frankie and Johnny’ at Samuel Goldwyn Studios, Hollywood. Taking a break from filming, Elvis spent his down time with his closest friends, known as ‘The Memphis Mafia’ at his Bel Air home.

Jerry Schilling, friend of Elvis and member of his famous ‘Memphis Mafia’, put a down payment on a new Triumph T120 650 Bonneville at Bill Robertson & Sons on Santa Monica Boulevard. When he brought the bike home, Elvis asked to take it for a ride around the Bel Air neighborhood. Jerry, of course, obliged and Elvis jumped on the bike. He was impressed, and in fact when he returned, he told his transportation manager, Alan Fortis, to “order one for all the guys, but… it has to be tonight!”

Bill Robertson & Sons managed to deliver seven Triumphs that night, a mixture of 650 TR6’s and the high-performance, twin-carbureted 650 T120’s. They rode together around Bel Air, riding late into the evening, only stopping when neighbors called the police to complain. The remaining bikes arrived two days later and the nine of them made sure they made the most of down time from filming, riding the Pacific Coast Highway together on Sundays.

All nine of the original bikes are currently lost to time, with no formal record of where they went after the summer of ’65. Triumph is now launching an appeal to fans around the world to help track down or uncover the fate of these bikes.

Triumph’s researchers are keen to hear from anyone who has a lead on what happened to one of these bikes, or perhaps a last known location.

If you have any information related to the whereabouts of one of these historic bikes, please contact Triumph at ElvisTriumph@TriumphMotorcycles.com.

This is terrific! This September the Goodwood Revival's Richmond Lawn will be home to the Betty Richmond Driving School! Complete with 1950s-style driving simulators where you'll be able to put your motoring skills to the test.

I completely love the cool, vintage, extra lengths that Goodwood goes to for entertaining the enthusiasts of the vintage racing event. Does anyone do a better job of it? Nope.

427 vs 428 vs 429 (because I've never learned diddly squat about Ford engines except their sizes)

A '68 427 will be a heckuva motor, but it's not quite the same as the NASCAR racing motor that grew the legend. Starting in 1968, the 427 was switched from solid lifters to hydraulic, and the rated HP dropped from 425 to 390. You would still get the cross-bolted mains in the block, the stress relieved casting, etc., a very fine motor, but not the great racing motor. You should pay less for a '68 427 than for the earlier solid lifter versions. (Although, the '68 engine can be converted to solid lifters.)

The 428 was Ford's effort to get big cubic inches in a street motor. It was a lot cheaper to make than a 427, and was never intended for pure racing purposes. Basically, a 428 is just a stroked 390, and tuned for massive torque over horsepower. The Cobra Jet 428 motors in Mustangs used heads from the 427, plus other enhancements to really put some hair on their chest. But, from the factory it was never as powerful as the (solid lifter) 427.

....................................................................................................................................................

427 - Essentially the rarest of the FE family of motor - built principally for factory "race cars" (and certian marine applications I believe) larger bore - shorter stroke - premium factory parts. Cross bolted bottom ends, modified oiling on some production runs (you have probably heard about "side-oilers") etc. NOS parts are very rare today and prices reflect it - IMO true 427's are not worth building unless you are restoring a car that was built with one.

428 - Also FE family. More common than the 427 but much less common than the 390/360/352 variants. Makes cubic inches with more stroke and less bore. Still generally a "performance" motor but not built with the same level of parts/care as the 427. Generally cheaper than 427 stuff but still not (IMO) cost effective to build (per HP given what you can get out of a 390 with aftermarket parts) unless you are restoring a 428 car or building a clone and want reasonable accuracy. That said - you can pretty easily replicate a 428 using quality late service blocks and aftermarket rotating assemblies.

429 - NOT an FE - this is a 385 series motor (same family as te 460). For pure HP/dollar you can probably get the most out of this engine at most price points if all you consider is the longblock build - the 385 series stuff is quite a bit more common than the FEs (although the FE crowd seems to be growing today and the aftermarket is attempting to get in gear). That said - you lose the cool factor of having an FE and if you have to modify mounts etc it might not be worth doing.

....................................................................................................................................................

In 1968, only the Cougar came with the 427
in 1969, only the T Bird had the 429

and if this info is wrong, tell me about it, but, you don't have to, I'm not going to memorize it and treat it as gospel. I'm sure other sources will say something else, but, again, I'm not trying to write the authoritative encyclopedia of everything automotive. Just sharing interesting stuff. In my spare time

the last steel truss bridge in the Wyoming, 115 years old, was officially retired last week, it once provided thousands of miners and tons of coal a passageway across the Tongue River northeast of Sheridan.

it led to one of the state’s most important and largest underground coal mines during the early decades of the last century.

the visual aesthetics of the bridge and its history have led to an effort to preserve it on land adjacent to the river.

In addition to a vehicle side of the bridge, there also a small railroad trestle side as well laid with mine car tracks that allowed the company to take coal across the river to the tipple and into the railroad cars.

the bridge is amazing in that it never was put on on the national historic registry as many others were and now are gone, but this bridge functioned until the day the temporary bridge was put in place.

the Swinomish tribe in Washington was awarded nearly $400 million in court, because they proved BNSF Railway trains trespassed on the reservation with oil trains

the company intentionally trespassed when it repeatedly ran 100-car trains carrying crude oil across the tribe's reservation, violating the terms of a 1991 easement that allows trains to carry no more than 25 cars per day.

"This just reflects the enormous wrongful profits that BNSF gained by using the Tribe’s land day after day, week after week, year after year over our objections," Steve Edwards, chairman of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, said in a statement. "When there are these kinds of profits to be gained, the only way to deter future wrongdoing is to do exactly what the Court did today — make the trespasser give up the money it gained by trespassing.”

The tribe, which has about 1,400 members, sued in 2015 after BNSF dramatically increased, without the tribe’s consent, the number of cars it was running across the reservation so that it could ship crude oil from the Bakken Formation

The route crosses sensitive marine ecosystems along the coast, over water that connects with the Salish Sea, where the tribe has treaty-protected rights to fish.

Bakken oil is easier to refine into the fuels sold at the gas pump and ignites more easily. After train cars carrying Bakken crude oil exploded in Alabama, North Dakota and Quebec, a federal agency warned in 2014 that the oil has a higher degree of volatility than other crudes in the U.S.

Last year, two BNSF engines derailed on Swinomish land, leaking an estimated 3,100 gallons (11,700 liters) of diesel fuel near Padilla Bay.

The tribe pointed out that a corporate predecessor of BNSF laid the tracks in the late 19th century over its objections. The tribe sued in the 1970s, alleging decades of trespassing, and only in 1991 was that litigation settled, when the tribe granted an easement allowing limited use of the tracks.

The easement limited rail traffic to one train of 25 cars per day in each direction.

According to Automotive News, Fisker has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S., a move that comes just a few weeks after the company’s Austrian unit – Fisker GmbH – filed for bankruptcy protection as well.

I didn't even know Fisker was still in business

Founded in 2007 by Henrik Fisker, a Danish automobile designer, the company received significant private and public investment, including a $529 million loan from the federal government. The company raised over $1 billion from private investors.

However, it repeatedly missed production deadlines, and production of the Fisker Karma was suspended in November 2012 with about 2,450 Karmas built since 2011 and just over 2,000 cars sold worldwide.

The company's federal loan was suspended in 2011; the government recovered some of the invested funds, but nevertheless took a $139 million loss.

In February 2014, Fisker Automotive's Karma vehicle design, tooling and a manufacturing facility in Delaware were purchased by Chinese auto parts conglomerate Wanxiang Group. In 2016, Wanxiang would rename the holding company for the assets of Fisker Automotive to Karma Automotive.

Following Fisker Automotive's structured bankruptcy auction in February 2014, Henrik Fisker retained the Fisker logo and trademarks. Wanxiang Group then transformed the assets of Fisker Automotive into a new company named Karma Automotive, thus launching the Karma Revero plug-in hybrid car based on the Fisker Karma. Henrik Fisker would later start another electric vehicle company named Fisker Inc. in 2016 with the Fisker logo and trademarks

Launched in 2016 and based in Manhattan Beach, California, Fisker Inc. is the successor to Fisker Automotive. In the summer of 2020, Fisker Inc. announced an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange through a merger with Spartan Energy Acquisition Corp, a SPAC backed by private equity firm Apollo Global Management. The company completed the reverse merger that autumn. Fisker Inc. developed the Fisker Ocean, an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV), which was released in 2023.

In early 2024, the company experienced intense financial difficulties, and its shares were delisted from the NYSE.[10] Fisker defaulted on a short term loan according to filings with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission[11] and has stated there is “substantial doubt” about being able to sustain ongoing operations.[12] It subsequently laid off most of its employees, closed its headquarters, and began substantially reducing prices on its stock.[13][14][15] By June, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in US court.

In March 2024, due to a net loss of over $463 million in 2023, Fisker announced that it was in financial trouble and did not have the necessary funds to remain in business through the coming year. Due to this, the company reduced its workforce by 15% and paused development of the Pear compact EV. Fisker subsequently entered talks with a major car manufacturer (suspected to be Nissan) regarding a $400 million cash injection (in order to generate cash or reduce costs) in exchange for access to the Fisker Alaska pick-up platform.[45][46] Several weeks later, The Wall Street Journal reported that Fisker hired financial adviser FTI Consulting and the law firm Davis Polk to work on a potential Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. As a result, Fisker's stock plummeted approximately 47% shortly after the announcement. The next day, Fisker dismissed talks of a bankruptcy filing, describing plans to engage with its advisors to plan out a deal with another major carmaker.

Nevertheless, Fisker soon announced that it would suspend vehicle production for six weeks in an effort to align inventory levels and progress strategic and financing initiatives. The company warned that bankruptcy was imminent and could occur within weeks.

One week later, on March 25, 2024, Fisker announced that the potential deal with the major carmaker had collapsed, and that the company was unable to meet a closing condition for a $150 million lifeline

In an article published on May 31, eight Fisker employees spoke to TechCrunch describing the dire situation at the company over the past few years.

The company lost track of payments made, taking months to complete an internal audit, with external auditor PwC receiving inadequate documentation from Fisker to compile their annual financial report.

Fisker CFO and COO, Geeta Gupta-Fisker attempted to run customer service using a digital chatbot rather than a call center, leading to customers struggling to get help with their cars. Fisker then hired a company to provide customer service, which later sued Fisker for failure to pay, alleging debts over $660,000. Gupta-Fisker also allegedly refused to build a stockpile of parts for service, in order to cut costs. The company did not set up a supplier quality team to audit suppliers, leading to substandard quality of parts on vehicles. In order to service cars, Fisker started "pinching" parts from their supplier Magna Steyr's production line in Austria, stripping down returned cars and cars used for marketing, as well as CEO Henrik Fisker's own Ocean. The supplier's employees were also asked to bring parts from Austria to the US in their luggage to solve the crisis.

An utter shit show, no one with any self respect would carry on like these last two paragraphs illustrate. Which was more of a debacle? The DeLorean, Fisker, or something I should be thinking of right now

A sleazeball used car lot dealership sold a car while it was in for repairs, and the story gets stranger after that...

Recently, Lindsey brought her Ford Taurus to Cherokee Auto Sales in North Knoxville, Tennessee – a used vehicle, “buy here pay here” sort of establishment – for service after experiencing some transmission issues.

This made perfect sense given the fact that she also purchased that same Ford Taurus from the same dealer back in June 2023, along with a 12,000-mile two-year service contract. She had driven 17,000 miles.

However, just 10 days after dropping her Ford Taurus off for those repairs, Thompson returned to the dealer only to discover that her car had been sold at an auction.

She states that she never missed a payment, however, and when the news channel attempted to get some answers from the dealership, an employee called police instead. Thus, Thompson is speaking with a lawyer to explore her options after paying around $2,700 on the car, though Cherokee Auto Sales did respond to the case in a statement posted to Facebook.

“It is important to understand that when a customer has a lien on their vehicle they do not own the vehicle until it is completely paid off,” the post reads. “The lien holder, in this case Cherokee Auto, is the owner of the vehicle. The vehicle was looked at by a mechanic and was not able to be fixed. And was sold at our discretion at a dealer auction. The vehicle had a bad transmission, excessive mileage from the customers driving habits, and bullet holes in the engine we had previously fixed for the customer that happened while the vehicle was in her possession.”
