after making munitions for the Navy in WW2, and Korea, this beast went off to a college for students to learn on... so, 8 years full duty for the war effort, and maybe 50 or 60 for students to learn on.

I have envied machinist since I've been old enough to know what one was. As a young kid that grew up with mini bikes, go karts, lot cars, lot buggies, snowmobiles and motorcycles (I've had lots of them)I was always working on them. Quite frequently I would need a part or component that was broken or didn't exist and thought if I only had this or that I could make it work. A machinist.....he can think and MAKE it. What a talent! My hat goes off to a true or even hobby machinist!!!
ReplyDeleteDitto! Mechanics, welders, machinists, tool makers etc do so much to make the things that I enjoy! Damn shame they didn't teach machinist trades in high school, not even automechanics. They had drafting and woodshop. I took them both.
DeleteI haven't ever been a machinst, btu I've been close, and used a caliper with a venier a lot, a Starett, and machinist 3-2-1 blocks, and parallel blocks, and there's a big satisfaction in working somewhere around the mechanic world, be it factory production equipment, car repair, Navy machinery, or working on cars in the garage etc.
Just working with tools is a soul satisfying endeavor.
Something just suits me to putter in the garage, dinker with the tools, clean them even though they're already clean, fool around with making the nuts and bolts and tools an bit more easy to get to, organize, and straighten out somewhat with the ones that don't fit in the rolling tool chest.
Check out Abom79 on youtube, he uses a Monarch lathe AND toured the Gestner tool box factory in Cincinnati, and they have all the parts to rebuild or restore your old tool boxes.
