THIS is a cool old way to start an engine off the crankshaft! So, why didn't something like this get engineered onto vehicles before the electric starter became standard equipment?
When you bought a Winton, it came with an air starter long before electric starters were invented in 1911 and first installed on the 1912 Cadillac. So, if oyu could afford a Winton, milady found it easy to drive - once she mastered the spark advance and the choke!
I didn't know the Winton had an air starter, or even an optional air starter. I knew a 1913 Pierce Arrow came with one... https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2016/09/the-step-between-hand-cranked-starting.html and when I looked through a Dykes, I leaned a bit more about the Air Starter. Those are the ONLY two examples I've ever come across of an air starter! I'd forgotten the thing existed until you mentioned it!
