I know there are still examples of these 1978 Vettes out there with no mileage, saved for investing, but isn't it time to realize they were junk then, are junk now, and can be lapped by a Hyundai? SO, why bother storing them if you're not in love with them, as no one else is going to come along and want to buy them

Yes, I stand by the statement that a 1978 Chevrolet is junk

    1. from the understanding of just how little power it made, and the factory all time low quality levels, and that instead of a limited edition run, they made as many as they could sell, and it was a pathetic version of the 1969 427 tri power.... because it only was a lousy 350 with only one carb. So, it wasn't even pretty, it had no chrome bumpers. I like the 69 and 70 for the bumpers and the great engine options

  2. Your critique of the speculators who bought and never drove these cars is spot on. As for the cars being junk, GM's hands were tied by the UAW and government regulations. There was no way they could have made a better car at any price where people would have bought them in any large numbers.

  3. Certainly not the first boat anchor to change status over time.

  4. I hadn't realized that the UAW in conjunction with the US government were responsible for the design of the 1978 Corvette after they had tied up all the GM people.I assume the GM designers were all released unharmed once the Corvette was in full production.

  5. A Dodge truck that year with the 360HP could outrun the vette.

    1. the Lil Red Express, and I think it was 1976 when the 185hp Vette was outclassed by the Duster, which beat the Vette in 1/4 mile and 0-60

  6. Ha! I had a '79 Chevy and it was junk. I worked for gm '76 to '79. My formans motto was GM could make a turd and people would by it. Wrong, Bob Langdon. Never went back. Roush builds his overpriced fords where Fisher Body Livonia used to be.

  7. Certainly a low point performance-wise, but all the malaise era-stuff is picking up speed in the collector market with the under-30 crowd. Partially because they are the only special-interest vehicles they can afford. GM was stymied by the crash regulations (no more chrome bumpers for the Vette) but could've been more proactive about the arrival of unleaded fuel and fuel economy/emissions regulations.
