Soviet Mi V-12 First flew in the late 60's but they only built preproduction types. It worked just fine and had a 55,000 lb payload- more than a current C-130. It most likely had no practical use but was one of the many Soviet efforts to prove they were the equal to or better than the west.
In fact, it was the largest helicopter ever built!
