Sure, a Gremlin isn't going to be in the top 500 coolest muscle cars if you were making a list, but - when coming across this at a car show, you'll probably stop and stare at it as long as you do at any other muscle car
the Gremlin 401-XR. R for Randall, X for the trim that included body side tape stripes, body color front fascia, slotted road wheels with Goodyear Polyglas tires, bucket seats and "X" decals.

I'm a Mopar guy first but I don't give a shit what anyone says.That is one really awesome friggin car. A 401 in a Gremlin had to be dangerously fast... Even the lower compression 1972-74 401. I think Randall AMC put headers on them and some other go fast goodies too. I don't care what anyone says. I always liked AMC's high performance cars. The 390/401 Javelin was a beautiful car throughout its whole entire 1968-74 production run. The 343/360 with a 4 barrel carb was no slouch either. And the 69 Hurst S/C Rambler and 70-71 "The Machine" were awesome bare bones factory built drag cars. AMC went all in on racing starting in 1968 and ended up winning 3 Trans Am Series Championships(1971, 72, and 76)with the Javelin. AMC really shocked everybody when they finished 2nd only to Bud Moore's Boss 302's in 1970 and won it all in 1971
ReplyDeleteYou missed the greatest AMC of all, the Hurst Super Stock AMX. But you nailed the rest! I don't know that the Machine was ever a factory drag car, or anything but a mediocre poser wanna be, after all, I've never heard of one drag racing. The Hurst SC/Rambler though, that WAS indeed a factory racer, even had glass packs!
