the replica of the statue of liberty, and a steam roller. Never thought I'd see them both in the same photo

To thank France for having having given them the Statue of Liberty, "the Paris Committee of Americans" was organized in 1884 to start a subscription to give Paris a replica of the statue of Bartholdi.

The statue was almost a poisoned gift, as the foundation and pedestal cost the city of Paris 110,000 francs at the time (when the statue cost only 60,000 francs).

The dedication was scheduled for 4 July, American Independence Day.

It took place in the presence of President Carnot and Mr. Whitelaw Reid, Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States.

While the statue in New York faces the sea, the one in Paris was turned towards the buildings of the exhibition [including the new Eiffel Tower] instead of looking towards America.

For the World Expo of 1937 it was turned to to face its sister in New York.

By the way there is a Facebook page for steamrollers https://www.facebook.com/For-the-love-of-Steam-Rollers-679395148784777/
