Did you ever hear of this? The Mattel X-15 Vroom. Designed to look like the experimental USAF X-15. This is a 3 wheeled pedal trike like NOTHING I've ever seen before

Mattel produced their X-15 in metallic blue and blue-green, and outfitted it with cool gadgets like a seatbelt with metal buckle, jet-style navigation stick, articulated back wheels for sharp turns, and Mattel's own V-Rroom engine effect with dash activation and a side speaker.

So how many kids had that handle bar poke their eye out?

Mattel also produced a Batman version of the X-15 in 1966.

  1. My dad was in the Air Force and my brother and I both had one of these for a short time.
Don't remember too much about them other than the rear steer was cool. Bicycles won out as they were easier to pedal. I remember these being heavy and difficult to get going fast, which of course is always the goal.
Being in the Air Force we moved every couple years and these took up too much space on the moving truck so were sold pretty quick.

  2. I had one of these when I was a kid, they were VERY heavy, I bet it weighed more than I did. Oddly enough I Won it in a Hot Wheels Weekend Race at JC Penny. They had numerous Mattel Toys I could choose from as my First Place Prize, I chose this.

  3. I had one. One of my favorite childhood memories. I thought I was the cat's pajamas. This was the precursor to the Big Wheel that my younger brother had. In retrospect, I really know how much my parents cared about me for buying it as a Christmas gift after I asked for it. Thanks for the memories...

  4. My very 1st memory in life was busting my dad getting my X-15 ready to give to me the next day for my 5th birthday present. He had just saw me take a neighbor's Radio Flyer wagon down a steep hill on the street we lived on and thought it would be a great idea to give me my X-19. And to think they came with a seatbelt to strap you in to that heavy piece of steel which somehow mysteriously disappeared after the 1st day. I'm lucky to have lived to tell the tale!! Still, it was a little slice of heaven in my 5 yr old world back then in the 60's. It was also the precursor to my whole life as a daredevil and a painfully handicapped one at that with motorcycles, skateboards and whatever else I could get my hands on to maim myself with but what can I say...it's been one heck of a ride!
Thanks so much for the memories.
    Sincerely, Crazy Craig

  6. I still have the X15 that I got for Christmas in 1964. I repainted it royal blue for my kids in 1994, then it was stored in the attic until yesterday. I plan to return it to its original color, but would like to find replacement decals. The only set I found are on ebay (for $110!). Anyone know of a cheaper alternative?

  7. I had one and it was one of the best toys of my childhood. My first bicycle replaced it; doing the 5 block commute to grade school would have been exhausting and humiliating in the X-15, but during it's heyday, it was great! (Performance note: The X-15 could do circles around the Ford Mustang pedal car the brat down the block had.)
