the last time I posted about the Mahan collection (of Macks and Cats) 7 years ago, I didn't see these photos of their museum

Last time I posted, they had this 16" gun from the battleship New Jersey, but they hadn't made it this nice

  2. I have to wonder about that 16" gun. Was it a worn out one that they we replacing. The ship is now a open museum for anyone to see. I also can't they would install a new one for a museum display. Guess we'll never know. What I do know that I was standing on a Navy Aircraft carrier looking down on the USS New Jersey that was being brought back in to service off of the coast of North Vietnam to knock out
Anti aircraft sites. They could fire a round that weighed around 2000 pounds 27 miles and be on target. I have friends that were stationed in the northen part of South Vietnam that could hear the exclusion and feel the round shake. One really big bad boy!

    1. it was probably a spare. One thing I love about the Navy, they have a supply system that is on point. They have the parts, know exactly how many, and exactly where they are. I did 6 months in a warehouse during my 1st sub's overhaul helping the supply dept count, recount, replace, and recount, parts from the sub. Everything had to be pulled off the sub, brought to a warehouse in the Supply Depot side of the Pearl Harbor subbase, counted, recounted, and if there was an amount of anything needed to bring the level up to some predetermined quota for any part, we ordered it. Then it was all brought back to the sub in drydock, recounted, and finally about the time they finished repairing other things like the propeller shaft, sonar equip, etc etc we buttoned it all up and got back to getting the paint wet with some fresh ocean water
