Newsom’s office cited an analysis by a group within the state’s energy commission, which oversees the oil and gas industry, that found that Chevron averaged more than 60 to 80 cents per gallon above unbranded alternatives.
As of Friday, the average price of a gallon of regular gas in California stood at $6.13, the only state in the U.S. charging more than $6 a gallon and the highest in the nation by more than 30 cents, according to the American Automobile Association.
