A new bridge in Finland is likely the world's longest car-free bridge and has a planned lifetime of 200 years.

  1. 200 Years??? I questioned the condemnation of a highway bridge near here after flood waters had washed away significant soil around the footing of one of three reinforced concrete supporting piers. There was no damage to the actual footing or displacement of the pier or bridge deck. I asked why it wouldn't make more sense to simply rebuild the footing vs demolish, remove, and rebuild the entire bridge. I was told "the bridge is near the end of it's twenty-five year projected lifespan anyway." 25 years! If I offered to build you a concrete house but then told you that you could expect to throw it away and build a new one in 25 or 30 years what would be your response? If you even bothered to respond...
