anyone want to guess on this? The car has been permanently modded to fit that portable unit in the trunk, is it maybe a gen set so the welder can drive the car for small arc welding jobs that don't require the full COE unit?

yes, I am aware, and may have posted a couple hundred articles and photos about the lack of cars and trucks during WW2, and the cars that got their trunks converted to truck beds. That's sorta what I know about. So, I'm surprised to see you thinking that I was unaware of what happened with cars during WW2, or WW1
