It's startling to discover a rev limiter working... for the first time. At 5500 rpm. That's too low for a rev limiter to be set. Why was it that low? Because I took my 69 R/T to JBA to get the ignition installed, and they simply DGAF about proper set up and install

I paid to have an entire MSD system installed, which I'd saved my income tax returns for, in 4 consecutive years, professionally installed at JBA in San Diego

One year I bought the spark plug wires, one year the above electronics and rev limited module, one year the distributor... and in 2020 I set aside 500 from the income tax return thinking that at 150 an hour, 3 or 4 hours ought to get the job done.

important words in that 1st sentence are "paid for", and "professionally". The 'paid for' part happened. The professionally? Well;     I've recently been told "shit happens" and I've "got the right to" post what I want to about it, and I got those quotes from the owners, J Bittle and Bruce Tucker.

Yeah, quotes. Quotes that were replies from asking them if they wanted to handle my complaints personally instead of Yelp review, etc.

They 'Don't Give A Fuck' about how I let other people know what a shit show happened when my car was there. So I'll go on posting about it my way. Honestly. The facts, and how I cope with the single greatest fucking debacle in my life as a car guy dealing with companies in the aftermarket car situation.

It's so disgraceful, it's nearly imaginable that they had some moron doing the work with no supervision, no training, and no experience working with musclecars.

Oh, wait, no - that's the actual situation. A college student with zero experience working on 1960s muscle cars. When I had to point out to the guy behind the counter that the hood was jammed down onto the battery posts, I then learned that not only was no one aware that the moron working on my car had not gotten the customer to authorize a replacement battery, but he installed one too tall to fit under the hood.

The other idiot, or, the same one - not sure, but does it really matter? Was told to install the MSD system I brought in to get installed.... and no one, not the service manager, the service writer, the mechanic, not even the shop manager - called me to ask what I wanted the rev limiter set at.

Who the fuck installs a rev limiter without being aware that it should be set at an RPM level which makes sense?

Where the sign over the door says "Full Service" but I think a quick look at the facts indicates false advertising

here's some more quotes from their website that also fall short in reality, in my recent expensive experience

"Most importantly, our staff is fully invested in maintaining the highest levels of expertise in the automotive arena."
"JBA has got your back"
"Our experienced technicians can assist you in installing everything from a complete supercharger system to a simple carburetor swap. ... to your engine for optimum performance"
"Adding any kind of accessory to your vehicle is easy when you have the expert service technicians at JBA who can help"

Maybe you're not convinced that these claims are applicable to MSD products...

https://jbaspeedshop.com/p-31066-partners.html  is the link where the claim to a partnership with MSD is made

I think it would be relevant for you car guys to have their email address in the chance that you'd like to let them know your thoughts on the results of my experience there.

Not just this ignition rev limiter debacle, but also the hood impacted onto the battery, the broken window, the lack of calling their customer to discuss what choices there are before the company decides what battery to buy, what oversize battery to install, what to do about the air filter being reinstalled with some of it hacked off, or not.

Just a few of the things they fucked up and didn't handle as you'd expect from any ordinary shop that's got someone intelligent anywhere on the premises, mechanics, management, supervisors... much less a shop that's specialized in adding aftermarket parts to muscle cars.

I think this is an example of the old phrase "egg on face"

  1. You did stop doing business with them, right?

    1. yeah, I was there only the one time, but the after effects like discovering the rev limiter set too low just occurred for the first time.
      It's certainly worth reporting about

  2. also looks like they broke one of the securing lugs off of the distributor cap right under where they cut your air cleaner. They must have a bunch of kids there that don't know what they're doing or worse just don't care!! That's another reason I do my own work I don't trust anyone with my car now a days. Too costly for the shoddy work that gets done by people with no work ethic.

  3. You seem to be very knowledgeable and capable of working on your own car. I know it's a commitment to find a place to work on it, getting the tools, and acquiring the skills (through youtube forums, or a mentor). Have you considered working on your own car?

    1. I've got the tools, and have done most of the work on this and may last couple Mopars, my 69 Super Bee, 71 Challenger, 72 Demon, 72 Barracuda.
But there are some things that need either more expertise, like installing the right springs in the distributor, not fucking up the crimping of the spark plug connector tips, and installing headers with either a lift which I don't have or a engine hoist I don't have, so I went with a local speed shop that I used to have a great relationship with where I thought there would be a problem free experience.
      Then they fucked up everything.
So, for the past 30 years I've been working on my own cars.
But you can't do everything, and some stuff, like torsion bar bushings, just aren't going to get done while the car is on jackstands in a one narrow car garage.
So some few things get farmed out.
Have you considered that this article, and the others about what JBA fucked up, isn't related to how or if I work on my own car, but how JBA fucked up what they are supposedly experts at. Installing aftermarket upgrades.
You might have been trying to offer a solution to problems that others cause, but, it's like telling someone that to not buy a bad apple pie they should make an orange pie at home instead.
      See, apples and oranges.
You might have missed my post on installing the 8 track player in 2019, and the new shocks, and the gas tank level float, and the rebuilding of the center carb...
I've had the car 18 years, I already rewired it from the headlights to the front seats, redid the brakes, and simply haven't had the money to do much else for all these years.

  4. I've had a set of their headers on my Pig for about 4 years. They seemed to be made of above average material and I couldn't find a single thing wrong with the workmanship. Something changed with JBA. Maybe that one guy, that is at every good shop who actually knows what they're doing and cares about doing it right, has moved on. Or that douchey guy that no one likes has have taken over the business.
