  1. Looks like a Milwaukee Road Hiawatha passing under the 35th Street viaduct in Milwaukee, on its way to the twin cities. This beauty was designed by Otto Kuhler in the early 30’s while working for ALCO. It was designed to run at 100 plus MPH all day. The Scribbins book on the “Hi” history includes photographs of grade crossing with large signs informing motorists of trains passing in excess of 100. By 1935 the Hiawatha’s were the fastest steam powered trains in the nation. In the early 70s while employed by the Milwaukee I heard from more than one old timer about a hogger making his last run from Chicago to Milwaukee in the 40s. Before departure he apparently announced to his fireman they were about to make history. And off they went. According to those who said they knew, history was made. That was a wonderful period of rail history.
