1. They were the "economy" version of a muscle car, not as desirable because they were not as nicely appointed and (more importantly) they felt light weight and cheap.
2. The ride felt like you were sitting in the bottom 2/3rds of a bathtub. You sat low in the car, and it wallowed around corners like it was too heavy to go as fast as you wanted.
There were 2 reasons, 1 cultural and 1 practical:
