it's a young person thing, to advertise your loyalty to a place by displaying it's 3 digit phone area code. This sort of thing was a result of the Beverly Hills 90210 tv show getting kids to associate a place to digits, and their generation, Gen Y, get tattoos, stickers, etc to show their pride in a place, instead of whatever NFL, MLB, or NBA jersey is from that town
where I grew up you only had to dial the last 4 digits,to make a local call since there were less than 9999 phone numbers in the local calling area.
i guess young people now, have never had to pay long distance charges either. or had to wait till after 9:00 PM to make a call since the long distance fee drops significantly then.
