service stations used to be classy, take pride in appearance... what happened?

Brown's Esso gas station in Indiana is shown here on Oct. 31, 1951.

Distinct in its use of porcelain enamel siding, the service station still stands in downtown Indiana on the southwest corner of Philadelphia and South Fifth Streets.

Ray Buggey operated it as Buggey's Exxon from the 1970s through 2000s. After ending the Exxon affiliation in 2005, his sons continue to run Buggey's Auto Repair and Towing today.

the same place, right now on Google Street....

  1. Although not the same station, here is an example of something similar...

In Central New York, there was an outfit called H.P. Sears Oil (No relation to Sears Roebuck). They had built a few porcelain cladded station when it was all the rage...
Here is one of them then... The doors had steel door protectors that had the name "SEARS" running vertically (you can just see some of it hidden behind the pump in this photo.

In this link, you can see one of the only ones remaining. It is Oneida NY. No longer a service station, now a used car lot. It has kept most of its original appearance. Curved corner windows, most of the porcelain tile work, the door protector on the entrance, although "SEARS" has been removed...

Sears operated as Sears until the late 80's when I believe lawsuits made them change the name... They chose SeaCo. The name didnt last long, as they sold all the stations that they still had operating to Hess. And last year, Hess sold them off and now operate as "Speedway".

There is a museum of sorts in Rome NY, where Sears was headquartered.
