It qualified for the Indianapolis 500, but wrecked in practice and never ran in the race. Some years later, it was resurrected from the junkyard, restored and raced on dirt tracks in upstate New York in the 1940s and ’50s. It has a straight-eight engine with four two-barrel carbs and makes 300 hp at 7,500 rpm — in its day, a real screamer.

I would be very surprised if that thing would pull anywhere near 7500 rpm. The most powerful version of the stock original only makes peak power (165 hp) at about 3800 and I doubt would go over 4500. At 7500 that big long crank would shake itself to pieces.
ReplyDeleteI don't make this stuff up, it all comes from a source, either I read it, or I hear it straight from the horse.... but I don't make it up. If they say it'll do it, I'm not telling them they are wrong. I've seen a whole lot of things that have been said to never be possible, accomplished.

ReplyDeleteI never mentioned two engines, so, what the hell Watson? I mentioned 1 straight 8, it has exactly 1 straight 8, and I don't know where you are referring to 2 engines. The words painted on the valve cover?

DeleteThe other blogger used the second engine as an example of a Buick straight 8. The engine with 2 carbs and the silver breather is in a different car that looks blue or purple, without the exhaust going through the side of the hood.

ReplyDeleteYes, but you have two engine shots, one hood up. The second shot is an engine bay.
ReplyDeleteThe first picture has four rochester 2G carbs, and the oil breather is green. The second pic, the oil breather is silver, and it has two side draught carbs. The inlet manifolds are different, and there is an exhaust pipe in the lower engine bay instead of out the side.
But your right, they both only have one straight 8. Lol.

ReplyDeleteThose are 2 different Buick Straight 8's. Both are beautiful examples, The plumbing on the cooling systems are different, of course the intake manifolds and carbs are diff. as already stated. ALL of Jesse's articles are over the top, and pictures are sharp and perfect. I've worked on all kinds of cars for 50 years and I really enjoy and learn here.
