postal car No. 34 was a Kansas City Southern postal car that went through the Joplin area delivering mail, but now it's returning to be an ice cream store

The car was parked for 40 years behind Jake’s Fireworks along West Fourth Street in Pittsburg. It’s new home will be in Redings Mill along Missouri Highway 86 south of Joplin.

“It still has all of the original signage and sorting boxes for the towns in our area. We intend to bring a lot of history to life with this car. This was an important part of Americana.’’

Garrigan said he hopes to have the All Aboard Ice Cream Co. in business this summer, customers will enter the 800 sq ft spacious rail car for seating after purchasing the ice cream in the depot where the ice cream will be served.

The car was manufactured by the Pullman Palace Car Co. and was in use from the early 1930s through 1967.

  1. Pittsburg is in Kansas, just across the border from Joplin. I live in Pitt, we're only about 30 minutes from Joplin, so I look forward to going to this ice cream shop.

    1. Dang! First Miami is in Oklahoma, now Pittsburg is in Kansas? What the hell is wrong with pioneers that can't make new place names? Drives me crazy!
