As far as rally cars go with better records, it's beat badly by the Lancia Delta with 10 championships in the WRC
http://www.therichest.com/sports/racing-sports/the-top-5-cars-of-the-world-rally-championship/5/
and the Lancer isn't even in the top 5, and it's only #18 on the greatest Japanese cars list, http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/100-greatest-japanese-cars-of-all-time.html while a Prius is #1
Also it falls below a flippin' Citroen on http://www.ebay.com/gds/Top-5-Cars-of-the-World-Rally-Championship-/10000000204640564/g.html and I did not see any mention of it in the history of the past decade and a half... hence Mitsubishi is killing off the obsolete non-competitive Evo. Ironically, evolution is the survival of the fittest, which it hasn't been, since before the Y2k scare.
Nor do I even consider it an originator of the 4 door sports car genre, that was set in the 20's by Duesenburg, (see #8 below) in the 70's by the Hemi 6 pack Charger in Austalia.
It barely made the top 100 list of greatest cars ever, at #92, and was slapped around silly by the #41 1961 Lincoln and even (gasp of horror) #60 the Chrysler mini van, #73 a Ford station wagon, and some Jeeps #47,#65, and #91, plus the VW type 2 microbus/van #79, and maybe the worst insult, the Ford Taurus #77. http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/the-100-greatest-cars-of-all-time.html
So, anyway, Mitsubishi finally had enough, and the 2016 is the last of the Lancer Evo
