the 94 Mercury Sable AIV (Aluminum-Intensive Vehicle) was about 400 pounds lighter than a Taurus SHO, with the same power train, and without rust

The AIV Sable went all-in on aluminum, reinventing the unibody. Most of its steel body panels were replaced with aluminum, and many suspension components followed suit.

Multimatic Motorsports (Ford's exclusive racing partner) entered an aluminum-bodied Sable AIV in the 1995 One Lap of America endurance event, and finished first in class (Mid-Price class) and 15th overall, ahead of far more exotic machinery, like the Cobra Mustangs, Corvette ZR-1s, and even RUF Porsches. The win validated the platform’s stiffness, reliability, and real-world performance advantages.
