Springfield (Oregon) Police Department said it will cover all Flock automatic license plate recognition cameras in the city in the coming days as it prepares to remove them.
Deputy Chief George Crolly said in a statement. “Given what we have learned, we do not have confidence that the current system provides the level of control and assurance we require.”
The announcement comes after the Eugene Police Department reported vulnerabilities and limitations in its own Flock ALPR system that raised concerns about operational needs, data security and community expectations.
There have been a lot of objections to Flock cameras and ALPR's recently because the data could be used by ICE for immigration enforcement. My own Senator, the stupid and lying Ron Wyden, is making lots of noise about this. But these same cameras have been used to surveille law abiding citizens for years and no one protested.
Hey Joe! (lol, I bet you've heard that before! Hendrix song reference if you haven't) I have the objection to the govt spying on people, and using automated cameras for red lights, and automated radar for speed traps. Frankly, it's obvious I break those laws a lot, safely, and think that the whole bunch of laws about how we drive ought to be less restrictive, and that law enforcement has the job, and they alone ought to be enforcing the laws. Mostly, because I could then get away with a lot more, and partly because I was an MP for 3 years, and believe that the job cops do is not anything I want robots doing. I want cops with compassion, and discretion who are not going to ticket someone running hot to the hospital, or having an van load of screaming kids causing too much speed, or lots of weird stuff that happens out there.
