It's ok, but it's not cool enough to pull big dollars even though it was driven by Elvis in a movie... that just doesn't matter much anymore.
Like WHO is going to take this to a car cruise, or car show, and lose their marbles simply because 60 years ago Elvis drove it?

I was blown away by the numbers this brought and still didn't sell. And I felt the same way about the Elvis factor....I just didn't get it? If it didn't have the Elvis attachment I don't think it would have brought a quarter of the price. I was also blown away by the GT40 prototype money. Went from one million to seven million in about sixty seconds and still didn't come close to selling. Wow, wow, wow!
ReplyDeleteA point I would like to make is: Who is Elvis. I mean, for people on their 40s today. I'm 43 and Elvis was someone from the past already when I was a kid. I'd never spend my money because of Elvis. I've watched Back To The Future when I was a kid and the DeLorean means more to me than Elvis. Maybe in the future the DeLoreans would worth less because people are not attached to them anymore. Maybe that explains why this auction didn't reach what they expected. Maybe Elvis's fans are now all dead...
ReplyDeleteI agree, I'm 49, he was alive until I was 6, and my mom was nuts for him. I suspect our mothers generation of women were all crazy for him. His music appealed to a LOT of people, he was an award winner in Gospel, Country, Rock, Pop... and that made for a LOT of fans. I prefer the ZZ Top Viva Las Vegas remix to his original even. BUT, the days of him being a bonus to selling something are about over. Unless it was one of the guitars he played, or something that doesn't gag a Nudie made jumpsuit with dazzle, it's just fad of the late 60s early 70s, and it's long over it's prime. His guitars, those would be still climbing in value I suppose, as they don't scream for attention like his jumpsuits, shag carpet jet, or whatever else was ridiculous. Maybe his Manx? That would be cool, but because it's a Manx. Or his Pantera.
DeleteMy Dad had a couple of cars from the 1958 film "Thunder Road". I had always thought of the film as obscure, or even forgotten. Pretty much the same time frame as "Loving You".
ReplyDeleteBut he took them to a "moonshine" themed car show in Appalachia, and people were really into them. And Robert Mitchum is no Elvis.
But you just cannot predict which cars are going to trigger someone's sense of nostalgia.
