Tony Hawk Recreates 'Central Park Mystery Skater' Photo From 1965, after some pretty impressive work to investigate this mysterious, dapper skateboarder from the mid-60s,

While the "mystery skater" still technically remains a mystery, everything that has sprouted since the investigation—and really, since 1965 when the original photo was shot—has been so rad. It brought the skateboarding community (and beyond) together in such a cool, unique way.

I posted about the photographer and his 1965 New York Central Park skateboard montage a decade ago  https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-invention-of-skateboard.html

a rare 1965 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Sport Fury with a card that says "Official Pace Car Indianapolis 500 1965" paraded at the 1965 Indy 500 race

Plymouth produced 35 official pace cars and an additional 1,900 replicas that were sold to the public.

IROC partnered with True Value, who served as the title sponsor for the IROC Series for decades, to be the primary sponsorship partner for the IROC exhibition event at Lime Rock Park, in July

“As True Value celebrated 75 years last year, and as we refreshed our own iconic brand this year, we reflected on legacy and the partners who have made it possible,” Kempa continued. “IROC is essential to the history of True Value, and we’re proud to be part of its future.”

Among the drivers at the IROC exhibition event at Lime Rock Park were Mark Martin, a five-time IROC Champion, Bobby Labonte, the 2001 IROC Champion, Al Unser Jr., a two-time IROC Champion, Geoff Bodine, the 1987 IROC Champion, Ken Schrader, Geoff Brabham, Davy Jones, and Greg Biffle.

Dale Earnhardt’s red No. 5 IROC Gen-3 Camaro, Mark Martin’s green No. 1 IROC Avenger, Dale Earnhardt’s orange No. 1 IROC Avenger, Al Unser Jr.’s yellow IROC Avenger, Danny Sullivan’s white No. 5 IROC Avenger, Jeff Gordon’s silver No. 6 IROC Firebird, and Bobby Labonte’s black No. 1 IROC Firebird were among the historical IROC cars at the event.

The duo of Evernham and Kauffman announced its acquisition of the iconic IROC brand, which had laid dormant for nearly 20 years, back in January. Evernham feels the goals of this initial IROC event at Lime Rock Park are being achieved.

“The primary objective of our IROC event at Lime Rock Park was to reignite the passion and excitement racing fans have for the legendary IROC brand. With today’s announcement, we have taken that one step further by rekindling one of the most iconic partnerships in motorsports history with True Value and IROC,” said Evernham. “True Value and their customers supported IROC for many years and we are grateful to have them involved as we bring IROC back to the track.”

Bobby Allison

the only NASCAR race with no winner, The Myers Brothers 250 at Bowman Gray Stadium, August 6, 1971. Bobby Allison won't get credit from Nascar, because his Mustang was a GA car, Nascar did not credit him, or anyone else with the GN win.

Bobby Allison won the race at Bowman Gray after taking the lead shortly before halfway. The 2011 inductee drove the No. 49 Coca-Cola Ford Mustang, a Grand American car. He took the lead from Richard Petty’s Plymouth. Petty was the highest finishing Cup car in second, the only other car on the lead lap.

Meanwhile, for the Bowman Gray race, should Allison’s win stand solely as a class win, seven-time Cup Series champion Petty would shift from 200 to 201 victories based on NASCAR’s precedent in other regional series. That would dramatically change the significance of several races, including what is currently accepted as ‘The King’s 200th victory in the 1984 Firecracker 400.

For Allison, who to this day maintains he won that Cup race in 1971, the additional win would break a long-standing tie with fellow Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip. Allison would move to having sole possession of fourth on the all-time NASCAR Cup Series win list.

why aren't more cities putting these idiot proof signs at more can opener bridges?

A custom 57 Corvette was stored away in a garage, and buried under a LOT of garage stuff for 57 years, and finally pulled out.

it seems there's a lot of stuff you can do with a wheel, like make interesting exercise equipment

and then there's this interesting exercise cart:

I was surprised to see the Winchesters driving everything but their 4 dr Impala in season 7 of Supernatural... but though they drove a Mustang, a Riviera, and a Pacer... I never expected a cool 70 Charger and a 69 Road Runner

It turns out that they made a plot point about locking the Impala away for season 7, though I don't know if there were production issues behind the storyline that the Leviathans (disguised as Sam and Dean) go on a killing spree (while driving a 67 Impala) causing the real Sam and Dean to become America's 2nd most wanted criminals so they lock up the Impala to avoid detection.

motorcyclists packed like sardines for as far as the eye could see in the motorcycle lanes along Woodlands Checkpoint Viaduct in Singapore... for the obscure reason that has nothing to do with motorcycles

My first thought was some biker protest, or biker funeral.

Nope

the Singapore dollar had hit a record high of S$1 to the Malaysian Ringgit 3.57.

According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA), the value was the lowest the Ringgit has reached since the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis.

So it's a currency exchange rate that caused a swarm.

ever heard of the Richard W. Erickson Antique & Classic Museum in Utah? It's a 50 year collection that fills 24 buildings, has 120 antique tractors, and a 60s vintage service station

Richard grew up in a farming family in Minnesota and was drafted into the military during the Korean War. When he reported for duty in San Diego, he drove through Utah and fell in love with it.

When his service was up Erickson "went back home, packed his flathead Ford car, strapped his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the back of it, and he drove to Utah.”

the museum collection includes a 1938 Lincoln Zephyr that was used in the 1991 film “Bugsy,”
a 1913 Pierce Arrow 48-B Runabout Motorcar,
a 1931 Packard Model 833,
a 1936 Cadillac Phaeton Fleetwood that belonged to an English baron,
and Steve McQueen’s 1946 Indian Motorcycle — one of his personal riders.

Bob Satterfield, at 17, was able to afford a ’70 LS6 Chevelle SS. Even better, it had the M22 and 4.10 gears. But it also has a color rare for the SS, and a bench instead of buckets

Then he attracted way too much attention from Georgia police, and too many tickets, and so he parked the Chevelle for 40 years

Harley-Davidson said it is ditching some of its DEI goals, a move that comes after it faced pressure from anti-diversity critics on social media, following similar change of course from John Deere & Co. and Tractor Supply

For the first time in the history of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Best of Show was awarded to a preservation car—a Bugatti Type 59, presented by Fritz Burkard of The Pearl Collection in Zug, Switzerland, a rare factory race car that recorded multiple Grand Prix victories

It is the 1st time a Swiss wins, first time a European wins, and first time a preservation wins.

The Type 59 Sports remains the only Grand Prix car to be converted into a sports car at the factory and exists today in virtually unrestored original condition as a perfect witness to the period in which it thrived.

The engineers removed the supercharger from the engine compartment and integrated a new oil tank with two-pump lubrication and a four-speed dry sump fully synchronized transmission with central shifting. They also re-tailored the bodywork: small motorcycle mudguards, a small windshield, small headlights positioned far down and side doors - with the new chassis number 57248.

A two-seater car not only for the streets, but also for the racetrack, that is where Jean-Pierre Wimille increasingly used the Type 59 Sports sports car from 1935 in the new 750-kilogram class. In the 1937 sports car season, this Type 59 Sports with Wimille at the wheel won the Grand Prix de Pau and de Tunis and de Marseille, among others. Affectionately called "La Grand Mère" (Grandmother) by the mechanics in Molsheim, the sports car took part in races in Africa and won the last edition of the Algerian Grand Prix. In July 1937, Jean-Pierre Wimille won a Grand Prix for the last time with the Type 59 Sports: the Grand Prix de la Marne on the race track in Reims - over three minutes ahead of the runner-up. The fast and superior Bugatti caused a sensation on the scene. At the end of the season, a long-time Bugatti customer bought this exceptional sports car with a successful racing history: King Leopold III of Belgium between 1934 and 1951.

Corbin went to great lengths to impress the public, and gold-plated a chassis for the 1908 New York Exhibit of American Made Cars at Madison Square Garden.

the factory in New Britain worked day and night to complete the gold plating, spending an estimated $20,000 ($670,000 in 2024). Then they mounted the chassis over a large mirror.
