tropical storm Hilary arrived in California 10 days ago as a rare tropical storm that dumped 2" of rain on coastal areas and 12" in the mountains. It's the first landfallen tropical storm in Southern California since 1939.

interesting

well, dang, this is a fun looking big 1970 van. Not really an RV, the interior is bullshit, but from the outside it looks nice (could have benefitted from a 5 dollar can of tire shine though)

I bet this is just fun as hell to drive

I couldn't find a photo of either of the subs I crewed on (717, 759) with a biker on the pier next to them, so, here's the 773

everyone that's been in the Navy is probably wondering the same thing, how the hell did they keep this much of the pier clear of all the stuff that piles up?

Alaska might be the last area known for bush pilot deliveries, but, it sure hasn't been the only one. The Lake Erie Islands region used Ford Trimotors and other planes to make deliveries to the islands without ferries

beginning in 1936, Ford Tri-Motors were a common sight in the the 17-miles between the Lake Erie Islands, playing a vital role to the isolated populations on the Lake Erie islands. 199 Tri-Motors were built by the Ford Motor Company from 1928 through 1933.

For the first time, people had a reliable form of all-season transportation for travel to & from the mainland, as well as in between the islands themselves.

With their large payloads and short takeoff and landing capabilities, Ford Tri-Motors were ideally suited for their work of hauling passengers and freight in and out of the short island runways.

In 1946 Bill Hershberger had a fleet of eight Tri-Motors that made up Island Airlines in Port Clinton, serving passengers from Port Clinton to Put-in-Bay, Middle Bass, North Bass and Kelleys Island flying passengers back and forth from the islands to Port Clinton.

There are only four or five Tri-Motors in operation today, mainly because of the costs associated with keeping them airworthy.

a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks (those Australian cardboard ones) caused the Russian defence ministry to report that drones were shot down over the regions of Oryol, Bryansk, Ryazan, Kaluga and Moscow.

A low-cost "cardboard" drone that arrives flatpacked and is held together with rubber bands is giving Ukraine an unexpected edge on the battlefield.

It's called the Corvo Precision Payload Delivery System, or PPDS for short, and is made by the Australian company SYPAQ.

It has been in Ukrainian hands since March, when the Australian government announced it would send at least 100 per month as part of a $20 million aid package, The Australian reported.

the Ford Tri Motor

The aircraft Ford designed was the result of a clever, but sneaky, way that Ford and his son Edsel came up with to see the workings of all the all major aircraft manufacturers in 1925

They promoted the Ford Reliability Air Tour, from 1925 to 1931, and used the opportunity to have his engineers take measurements and design data on all the aircrafts assembled for the competition to come up with what would ultimately become the Ford Tri-Motor.

Thanks Marc! Here's the movie preview for the movie Ferrari, staring Adam Driver, and directed by Michael Mann (Last of the Mohicans)

Adam Driver looks very different, but still doesn't look like Enzo. Enzo was fat in his racing team days shown in the movie

The Road and Track magazine piece https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a44949665/watch-michael-mann-ferrari-trailer makes no sense to me. Unless that writer was being ironic, or wrote that one opposite day, why get dramatic over Ford Vs Ferrari not showing men crying? What about actors overly dramatically crying makes a movie better? IF they make the AUDIENCE cry, then they've performed, and created a cinema production that is worthy of awards.

the lunar rover at the moon's south pole hasn't found ice yet, but it has found sulfur, aluminum, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen. No hydrogen though

Sulfur is of particular interest based on research that indicates it could be used to make concrete, rather than relying on Portland Cement, whose ingredients are likely to be less accessible.

When quantities of Portland cement were first imported to the United States in the 1880s, its principal use was in the construction of sidewalks. Its name is derived from its similarity to Portland stone which was quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. It was named by Joseph Aspdin who obtained a patent for it in 1824.

Portland cement is one of the lowest-cost materials widely used over the last century. Concrete produced from Portland cement is one of the world's most versatile construction materials.

Portland cement had been imported into the United States, and in the 1870s, it was being produced near Kalamazoo, Michigan.

By the early 20th century, American-made Portland cement had displaced most of the imported Portland cement.

Hybrid Aircraft - Boeing B-17G / Consolidated B-24J

"The availability of the Consolidated B-24 in increasing numbers soon made it evident that, whatever the qualities of its companion, the B-17, the Liberator led in several vital areas, especially in range and bomb load. But by 1944, an additional turret in the nose had increased weight and drag reduced the margin.

In addition, the Liberator's ceiling, already less than the B-17s, was further reduced. Furthermore, the addition of the turret reduced forward vision from the flight deck, and cramped the working areas of the navigator and bombardier, in the nose.

The deterioration of the B-24's operational suitability concerned the USAAF sufficiently for them to launch a priority project to improve the Liberator's performance. Air Materiel Command undertook the "B-24 Weight Reduction Program", with the objectives of improving the speed and altitude capabilities of the aircraft, and also of solving the poor forward visibility and crew quarters problems.

In March 1944, at Wright Field, the Weight Reduction Committee considered a range of options. Among these were more powerful turbo superchargers to improve the ceiling, a faired Bell power boost tail turret, and a single tail assembly calculated to add 10 mph to the B-24's speed.

The B-17 nose configuration was better streamlined, and provided adequate working space for the navigator and excellent visibility for the bombardier. It was at first used as a bench-mark by which to measure any B-24 modification.

But it was heavier, and the project was discontinued

thank you Robert for sharing the Bridgestone oil change sign... that some idiot wrote and no one proofread. It says they drop an oil pan to change oil, every time, and that they remove the "Oil Pain"

Step one, seems to show an air pressure gauge. Why not show a dipstick?
Step 2, ..."drain the old oil by removing the oil pain."
I'm pretty sure that step 3 isn't exactly accurate or correct.
But step 4 verifies they certainly do mean to drop the oil pan, and then, reinstall it on the engine.

Maybe that actually is the right way to change the oil on some vehicle, but, not that I know of. I just suppose it's possible.

use any parts you can find, that's the beauty of interchangeable parts and the machine age... and that is the only way this B 17 could be built, from the major assemblies of at least 4 planes

The fuselage was rebuilt from parts of B-17Gs 44-83722 and 44-83316. The inner wing panels came from 44-85813, and the outer wing panels from 44-83722. The vertical stabilizer came from 44-83525. The nose compartment and the radio room compartment had to be built as a new structure.
The forward fuselage is externally complete. Most aircraft systems such as electrical, hydraulic, and control cables have yet to be installed and most will wait until the fuselage is joined at Station 6 and/or the inner wing panels are attached and the airplane is up on its landing gear.

44-85813 was severely damaged in an April 1980 accident at Bear Pen, South Carolina, while operating as an air tanker. The fuselage was largely burnt out. The wings, though damaged, were relatively intact.

Both outer wing panels, as noted earlier, have come from atomic test target aircraft 44-83722. This airplane was dragged off the Nevada Test Site in 1965 and subsequently used for parts to support air tankers

The restoration project began in 2005 by Jerry Schiffer, who shortly afterward was killed in an airplane accident. However, his three adult children (Dave, Eric, and Andrea) took up the project and have driven it forward over the past eighteen years.

It's not likely to get in the air for another decade, if everything goes well, but it's interesting to learn that this B 17 is in progress, as I hadn't heard of it before.

Farmers Insurance laid off 11% of its workforce

In recent months, Farmers, Allstate and State Farm have pulled back on property insurance in states like Florida and California.

As these regions become increasingly susceptible to natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires, in the era of climate change, the insurers have cited the need to reduce risk exposure and operating costs — but critics have accused the companies of exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis.

Monday’s layoff announcement from Farmers follows mass job cuts seen at T-Mobile, Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Disney park employees, newspapers and some higher education jobs.

the company known as US Mags, is run by the son of the cofounder, and is a conglomerate of Ansen, Rebel, Dan Gurney, Foose Wheels, and American Racing.

a 20-inch water main used since 1896, broke in Times Square, and located directly over the subway system, suspending subway service at the Times Sq subway station, and shutting down affected city streets for the day

The water main located 10 to 15 feet below street level burst at 3 a.m. on Seventh Avenue, near Times Square, flooded streets and sent water cascading into the subway system, shutting down several Midtown intersections and temporarily suspending subway service in the area.

As crews work to excavate and repair the broken water system, roads remain closed on Seventh Avenue, between West 42nd and West 39th streets, and on West 40th Street between Eighth and Sixth avenues. Officials said they expect them to remain closed throughout the day.

The flooding forced the MTA to partially suspend subway service on the 1 and 3 train lines and reroute 2 trains. Just before 11 a.m., the agency said all three lines were up and running, though with extensive delays.

It was about a decade ago that it seemed every month a century old water main was breaking and causing flooding and damage to California cities, I guess it's not news that the cities can't afford to do inspections, maintenance, or replacement based on age and statistical data that shows how likely they are to not continue to function. But the insurance companies are analyzing every iota of data about driving, to ram in higher costs to customers.
Makes me wonder, why aren't these millions of dollar events like this, worth the same focused analytics, and prevention, in cities that can afford to run emergency crews to cope with breaks, on over time, at union scale?

Train services between France and Italy have been halted for the foreseeable future after a huge rockslide in the Maurienne valley in the French Alps blocked some railways and road

Regional authorities in Savoie said the rockslide occurred at 5:15 pm (1515 GMT) on Sunday, when "boulders with a total volume of 700 cubic metres (25,000 cubic feet)" slammed into a protective barrier along the RD 1006 road that leads to the Mont-Cenis pass into Italy's Susa valley.

The landslide forced the suspension of all cross-border trains on the Chambery-Turin line, as well as TER regional trains in the Maurienne valley, French rail operator SNCF said.

The Frejus tunnel connecting France and Italy under the Alps has also been closed to heavy trucks, whose drivers are being advised to use the Mont Blanc tunnel or the A8 motorway instead.

Sean Penn portrays a New York City taxi driver in a new movie called "Daddio", premiering next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie takes place in a New York City taxi, on a ride from JFK to Manhattan, capturing a single  conversation.

Originally conceived as a stage play, Daddio boasts a script penned by playwright Christy Hall, who directs.

https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1104621-dakota-johnson-and-sean-penns-new-film-set-inside-taxi-in-nyc

Hall wrote the cabbie character with an abundance of internal paradoxes, so it wasn't difficult for her to realize that Penn's consistent on-screen complexity made him a perfect fit for the role.

"His immeasurable talent affords him the unique ability to ride that razor's edge that we all have within us, that thin dividing line between our greatest angels and our darkest demons," Hall says. "Our cabbie needed to be both deeply charming and wildly offensive. He is vastly intelligent and shockingly base, highly evolved and stuck in his own era, has a hardened exterior and also a tender heart. I don't know anyone else in the world who could so effortlessly allow all these truths to co-exist within one unforgettable character."

Sean Penn doesn't need any intro here, but, a refresher on his career isn't out of order, he is a two-time Academy winning actor, filmmaker, and author who has frequently championed charity and volunteerism in disasters such as Katrina, and the catastrophic Haiti earthquake, and has been to Ukraine numerous times over the last two years, co-directing SUPERPOWER, a documentary capturing the “David and Goliath” struggle between President Zelensky’s Ukraine and Putin.

As a filmmaker, Penn’s been  the Academy Award nominated, as an actor, Penn has been nominated five times for the Academy for Best Actor winning twice for MYSTIC RIVER and MILK.
