The Nova in the Kindig outdoor area at SEMA

the older I get, the more I realize the truth in that saying about watching the obits everyday is watching everyone you've ever heard of that did something cool, die.

one of the women that made the ZZ Top videos so great, has passed on to her great reward.

Kymberly Herrin, appeared in ZZ Top’s "Legs" music video, "Ghostbusters", Road House,  and Beverly Hills Cop II. She was also Playmate of the Month for March 1981, and the cover model of Playboy’s September 1982 and September 1983 issues.

According to her obituary, Herrin pursued her passion for sailing. She lived aboard and sailed on a 75-foot yacht for several years.

Spartan Royal was renovated by a Nashville musician who first wrote a song about a trailer and the freedom it symbolizes, then decided to buy a vintage one

The song he wrote inspired him to get this 1949 Spartan “Blueberry” Royal Mansion. He already had the perfect spot where the old Spartan could start a new life as a AirBNB vacation retreat for vintage lovers. Together with his wife Stephanie, he owns a 40-acre farm near Nashville

what this license plate indicates, is that there is a California plate with π (Pi) aka 31415

Sgt. Darren Kacalek, who heads the Berkeley police union, is on leave since being accused by a former police officer of establishing “illegal” arrest quotas and racist texts

A Berkeley police bike officer who was fired after intentionally colliding with a car, according to sources familiar with the crash, has brought forward new claims about "unethical and illegal" practices he says were prevalent in his unit.

In his email, Shedoudy claimed the bike unit had "arrest quotas of downtown unhoused" and used "questionable legal tactics"

Berkeley police were in an uproar Thursday after leaked text messages allegedly showing the president of the police officers’ union making racist remarks and demanding arrest quotas.

Nearly 35% of Berkeley’s police stops last year were by blacks, despite only 8% of the city being black according to the census.

I just posted 3 days ago how LAPD had to back off their abusive methods because they clearly were blatantly racist: http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2022/11/i-just-learned-that-lapd-has-director.html

This caboose that once was used in this area, was stored in a nearby railyard before it was by the chamber from Reading and Northern Railroad. Now it will be a downtown tourist attraction for historic railroad education

County officials thought it would be fitting to buy a caboose and place it in an area known for its rich railroad transportation history.

Not only will the caboose teach people about the railroad's history in the area but to attract people to downtown Lehighton's trailhead off Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard, which used to be a train station.

The Department of Transportation fines airlines that refuse to give customers refunds for canceled flights, $7.5 million, and they must refund customers for canceled flights

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on Monday announced that the department is assessing fines totaling $7.5 million against six airlines, and the DOT is ordering those airlines to pay $600 million in refunds to hundreds of thousands of customers who had been denied them.

Found in Nebraska, this neglected 'Cuda has been with the same owner since 1975. It still has its original 426... thanks Mike!

Andy Warhol's photo series 'Crash" sold for 87 million...

it's a 12 foot tall exhibit.

Years ago I posted about his other famous photo series, Green Car, that sold for 71 million dollars in 2007.  In Nov 2013 it sold for 105 million  https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2014/01/andy-warhol-i-didnt-know-hed-made-other.html

reading the book Hot Rod Magazine, 75 years... and the first thing I notice they screwed up, was spelling Burt Munro's first name correctly

Why doesn't anyone have the sense to have me proof read their book if it has anything to do with what I've focused on for the past 16 years ?

By the way, it was written by former Hot Rod editor Drew Hardin. You'd think he'd get legendary people's names right, OR get someone to proof read his book, that knows how to spell BURT not BERT. Book editors in some New York office don't know shit about Burt Munro.

But this wasn't the only easy to find error of a someone he should know the spelling of, Elena, a Hot Rod staffer, also was misspelled:

and the well known people's names weren't the only spelling errors that those that rely on Spellcheck missed:

and they misspelled chassisied

and how do you forget that you're talking about the J2000, before the end of the paragraph?

seeing what everyone else has seen, and realizing what no one else has, is the definition of discovery - but I feel it also means invention, and genius. thank you Marc!

escaping the Soviet invasion by motorcycle, the parents of Paulina Porizkova put their daughter on a unique road to fame and fortune

her anti-Soviet dissident parents, Anna Pořízková and Jiří Pořízka.fled Czechoslovakia and moved to Lund in Sweden to escape the Warsaw Pact invasion, on a motorcycle. They didn't attempt to accomplish this daring and risky escape with a 3 year old girl, because the soviets were shooting people trying to escape

They left her under the care of her grandmother, believing she could be brought out later, which wasn't allowed by the Communist regime.  Czechoslovak authorities would not allow her parents to reclaim her, and the ensuing battle was widely publicized in the Swedish press, making her a cause célèbre. (think of the ridiculous furor (congressional hearings) over Elian Gonzalez, who, at five-years-old was found on Thanksgiving Day clinging to an inner tube three miles off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida because his mother and 11 others attempted to escape Cuba in a small aluminum boat with a faulty engine, they all drowned in their attempt, only he survived.)

Her mother then secretly returned using a fake passport in an attempt to rescue her, but was detained by the police and then placed under house arrest with her family. When Swedish politician Olof Palme put pressure on the Czechoslovakian government, the Porizkova family was finally reunited after 6 years.

Her mother, a midwife, remarried at least twice and, as of 2010, was reported to be serving in the Peace Corps in Uganda

In 1988, Estée Lauder offered her the highest-paying modeling contract ($6 million) at that time.

At age 19, she met the signer for the Cars, when hired to perform in the video for the song Drive, and married him 5 years later.

She loves to play classical piano, especially Chopin, and often copies oil-painting masterpieces in museums, using pastel sticks and a sketchpad. Her father and grandfather were both painters.

Hagerty actually has "get your cars the hell out of a hurricane path" insurance. But then, rich people (only type of idiot I've heard of that collect these to flip for investment instead of driving them) don't rely on insurance to pay for moving their car collection away from hurricanes

Hagerty will pay 50% of any reasonable expense incurred to move a covered vehicle from an area experiencing emergency conditions, up to $250 per vehicle per occurrence with an annual cap of $1000 per vehicle.*

an infographic about Nissan I found at SEMA

SEMA had a large booth area (where PPG and Toyota used to have their booths in the North Hall) where the drag racing cars of noteworthy blacks were, which either illustrates that the USA is 76% white 14%black, or that motorsports is not a vocation that minorities in the USA participate in, vs athletic sports

I've posted about anyone that caught my interest, regardless of nationality, location on this planet, ancestry, age, or sex.

There just haven't been much more than 2 or 3% of any minority in American motorsports. Not in Nascar, drag racing, go carts, Indy cars, atvs, trucks, mud bogs, swamp buggies, boat racing, land speed racing, etc. Anyone that isn't a white guy is an anomaly.

Reasons are probably mostly opinions on how that is, but, again, the population by census, isn't a matter for speculation, it's a science fact from the govt statistics. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/PST045221

I still think it's ridiculous to use the term African American, unless you're talking about Elon Musk, Charlize Theron, or others that actually were born in Africa, and are now American citizens.

Either call people American, colored (not my term, just ask the NAACP who they represent) POC (people of color), or black. (if that offends you, just ask the govt or any survey why I am "white" instead of European ancestry)

People getting upset about race simply are irritated about everything, and out to fight about terminology of something, political, gender, racist, or their favorite sports team of athlete millionaires of different ancestry. It's emotional, not logical

illustration of a diversion that the family of Louis XIV purportedly used at the chateau of Marly-le-Roi. Called the Jeu de la Roulette, it’s essentially a miniature railway in which the train is pushed along by servants, almost certainly was the first pleasure railway ever built.

According to Alex. Guillaumot the apparatus consisted of a sort of railway on which the car was moved by manual labor. In the car, which was decorated with the royal colors, are seen seated the ladies and children of the king’s household, while the king himself stands in the rear and seems to be directing operations. The remarkable peculiarity to which we would direct the attention of the reader is that this document shows that the car ran on rails very nearly like those used on the railways of the present time, and that a turn-table served for changing the direction to a right angle in order to place the car under the shelter of a small building.

Scientific American says that the engraving’s authenticity is certain — La Nature took it from the archives at Paris among documents dated 1714.

Standing ovation, and a tip of the cap, to Southwest Airlines who kindly helped a passenger after boarding was complete, and the airliner was ready to taxi... by getting a passenger’s phone found in the gate waiting room, out to the plane's pilot, then to the passenger!

A Southwest Airlines flight in California’s crew at Long Beach Airport worked together with the captain of the departing plane to return a passenger’s phone via the cockpit window.

The plane, which had already left the gate in preparation for takeoff, was sitting on the tarmac when a passenger waiting to board a separate flight noticed a phone in the gate area, according to a Southwest spokesperson. This passenger then brought the phone to a Southwest operations agent, telling the agent that the phone’s owner had already boarded the taxiing aircraft.

Rather than throw the phone into the lost-and-found or having it sent to the flight’s destination city, the agents in the airport passed it off to the ground crew, who “jumped it up” to the plane’s captain while the plane sat on the tarmac, according to a Facebook post shared by Southwest earlier this week.

The post also contained video which showed two members of the ground crew taking turns trying to hand the phone to the captain, who was leaning from the cockpit. Passengers near the gate could also be heard cheering once the phone was safely in the pilot’s hand.
