3 public high school skilled trades teachers—a precision manufacturing teacher from Arizona, a landscape operations teacher from Florida and a welding instructor from Missouri—are first-place winners of the 2019 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.
They and their schools, along with 15 second-place winners and their schools, will receive more than $1 million in prizes.
Gutierrez, Schepman and Trankler were each surprised in their classrooms by representatives for Harbor Freight Tools for Schools with the news that they and their schools will receive $100,000—$70,000 for the high school skilled trades program and $30,000 to the teacher.
“Skilled trades educators are crucial to helping students stay engaged and motivated in high school,” said Danny Corwin, executive director of Harbor Freight Tools for Schools. “These amazing teachers connect students to promising careers, show them how to apply academics to the real world and help them feel pride and accomplishment—something they might not experience in all their classes. We make these awards because we believe in these teachers, we believe in these students, and we believe this vital sector deserves more support and investment.”
Each of the 15 second-place winners across the country were also surprised with the news that they and their schools will receive $50,000. In addition to the more than $1 million in first- and second-place prizes awarded by Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, the company Harbor Freight Tools donated $32,000 to 32 semifinalists.
The Prize for Teaching Excellence was started in 2017 by Harbor Freight Tools Founder Eric Smidt to recognize extraordinary public high school skilled trades teachers and programs with a proven track record of dedication and performance. Prizes are awarded by Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, a program of The Smidt Foundation.

When E.L. Cord decided to get out of the car business in August 1937 and take up real estate in California, he sold his stake of the Cord Corporation – the holding company that controlled Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg and Checker automobiles, along with American Airways, Stinson Aircraft, and several other companies – to a group of investors , who sold the Auburn and Cord assets to Dallas Winslow, a businessman who had become rich and famous by buying up the assets of other, smaller defunct automobile companies including Flint, Briscoe, Stearns-Knight, Peerless, Franklin, Wills St. Clair, Haynes, and dozens more.
Winslow apparently had little interest in the Cord and Auburn names and trademarks. Instead, he spent the next 20 years marketing, selling, and in some cases reproducing parts for those cars.
In 1960 shop teacher Glenn Pray saw the potential in the defunct marques, and so put together the $75,000 deal and then moved 350 tons of parts and the operations of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Company to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Pray licensed the Cord name to other companies like Mattel and Hallmark, and sold off the Auburn name and trademark in 2005 for $500,000.
He died in 2011, and his family decided to sell the Cord trademarks in 2014 for $242,000 to Craig Corbell, who got to within a year of putting prototypes for his Cord revival project on the road, but tossed in the towel citing the lack of guidelines from the federal government regarding low-volume replica cars.

Roger Penske receives Presidential Medal of Freedom
Roger Penske received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, from United States President Donald Trump on Oct. 24 at The White House.
Guided by his father’s favorite phrase, ‘effort equals results,’ Mr. Penske built his one car dealership into Penske Corporation, a leader in global transportation services. On the track, Mr. Penske built and led Team Penske into the most successful motorsports team in history.
Team Penske, Penske’s motorsports team across various series, has won more than 530 races and 35 championships in its 53-year history.
Penske becomes the second person in the motorsports industry to earn the honor. NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven-time champion Richard Petty received the honor from President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

another special edition Mustang I've never heard of, well, two of them. The Ski Country and the She Country
in 1965, Colorado Ford dealers were offering a special edition Ski Country Mustang. They sold great.
The dealership, Goodro Ford, realized that selling special edition Mustangs was an easy and fast way to sell more Mustangs.
So, the dealership owner who had just taken over for her terminally ill husband, created her own line of ‘She Country’ Mustangs.
She ordered 48 cars finished in what were considered “feminine” special order colors: Limelite Green, Bermuda Sand, Evening Orchard, and Autumn Smoke. She then added a personalized plate with the customer’s name on the dash.
Those small changes were all it took to make the vehicle stand out from traditional Mustangs. They were not only a sales success, but did well in marketing for the dealership as well.
In addition to building and selling these special Mustangs, Goodro also created a special waiting room at the dealership, specifically for women, that featured nicer decor from a local furniture store. Ultimately, these changes worked, as Goodro Ford’s sales rose 12 percent after Ann took over.
Goodro went on to become the first woman president of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association
