1962 Experimental Oldsmobile F-85

Oldsmobile’s new experimental F-85 two-seater is styled along sports car lines. A glass-fiber tonneau cover, incorporating an airfoil-section roll bar, covers the rear seat and sweeps down into the cockpit to merge with a special center console. This carries a glove box, ash tray and a T-handle control for the hydramatic transmission.

Black leather bucket seats face a new instrument cluster designed around two large dials, the left one a 140-[mph speedometer, and the right one a single dial including the four standard engine instruments. Smaller dials flank these – on the left a 6000 RPM tachometer and on the right a pressure gauge for the car’s turbo-supercharged V-8 engine.

This experimental Oldsmobile features a full-width concave grille with a brush-chrome lower surface reflecting the air intake grille in the area above. Within the concavity are two headlamps and two long-range driving lamps, just above bumpers that sweep around to float in front of the grille. Along the sides are two intake scoops ahead of the rear wheels, and a low rally-type windscreen surrounds the cockpit.

The F-85 is finished in Firefrost silver, with a narrow black stripe down the center between the twin louvers on its hood.

Road Angel, 2016
Artwork © Terry Allen
Bronze with audio and light. 65 x 181 x 81 1/2 inches.
Collection of The Contemporary Austin. Commission, purchased with funds provided by the Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation, 2017.2.
Photograph by Brian Fitzsimmons.

This piece, cast in the Deep in the Heart Art Foundry, in Bastrop, was unveiled in December on the outdoor grounds of Austin’s sculpture park at Laguna Gloria. The work is an almost-exact copy of Allen’s first vehicle, a 1953 Chevy, except for a missing front passenger-side tire.

That wheel well instead hides a speaker that blasts, as Allen put it, “Things you’d want to hear coming out of a car.” an ongoing audio archive: recordings by musicians, artists, and writers emanate as if from the car’s radio at random intervals, recounting songs and oral histories lived in the backseat and behind the wheel.

The American romance with the automobile and the open road can be seen throughout the artist’s decades-long career, as he came of driving age in the 1950s, filled with the promise of adventure and escape. Allen has noted: “The sense of hurtling through great black empty space...late at night on a dead straight line of asphalt with headlights shining...driving a car as fast as it would go...and listening to The Wolfman on the radio turned up as loud as it would go...is probably where every freedom I most value first began.”

Road Angel, 2016, a bronze cast of a 1953 Chevrolet coupe, embodies a range of emotional and nostalgic associations with the American automobile. The artist has placed this three-wheeled car far from any road, resting haphazardly amid the trees, as if the vehicle has careened off its path or the stage were set for a lovers’ tryst.

Lubbock native and one-semester Texas Tech dropout Terry Allen, arguably the first of Lubbock’s legendary post-hippie semi-country singer-songwriters.

Allen’s first two albums, 1975’s Juarez and 1979’s Lubbock (on everything), are as canonical to hard-core Texas music fans as Townes Van Zandt’s Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas and Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger; even those who don’t know Allen’s music firsthand have probably heard his song “Amarillo Highway,” which has been covered by the likes of Bobby Bare, Robert Earl Keen, and Sturgill Simpson.

As large as Allen looms over Texas music, however, he is even more revered as a visual and multimedia artist: his paintings, sculptures, and installations—which can be found everywhere from New York City’s Museum of Modern Art and Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art to the DFW and Houston airports—have earned him both national and international recognition.

some times it's very frustrating to be inquisitive.

So I spotted this in the background of a video, and I figure, hey, I should check that out. Probably a cool story why there is a big ol WW2 era looking airplane engine on display - without a plane or wing.

It's easy to see it's in the Flat 12 Gallery showroom, that they had in Lubbock Texas... but no amount of Google Fu was getting me anywhere close to getting a better look, or info, about it, for an hour.

That's a lot of wasted time.

RHCP lead singer's Grand Wagoneer... impressively factory fresh looking

Huh, I just stumbled across the source of a couple of cars to the last Fast and Furious movie, Jeff Allen's shop, of the tv show Car Chasers

https://www.facebook.com/pg/FlatTwelveGallery/photos/?ref=page_internal

in the shop is this cool WW2 bomber engine... minus the wing and plane. This is the best image of it I can find yet

Gold Rush Rally, never heard of it, and why would I? I don't drive a car worth 6 figures.

and like most 6 figure cars, they get a vinyl wrap instead of blowing up the resale with real paint. Can't find any fault with that.

The Shore to Shore trail... well, there are two of them, Michigan and Florida, but MI is horse and hikers only. FLA isn't so stupid. Both trails are roughly 240 miles long

It is through a national wildlife refuge, Canaveral National Seashore and Kennedy Space Center, and connects with the East Coast Greenway, a 2900-mile stretch of trails connecting Maine to Key West

250 miles long and currently more than 80 percent complete. The trail will link communities between St. Petersburg and the Canaveral National Seashore.

Florida has 54 rails to trails, and 780 miles total

there are still some areas to be finished... there were 4 gaps between existing trails.

On the flip side:

Michigan, long known for doing stupid things (ask anyone about the Michigan DNR for example, or having a time zone line one county away from the damn border with Wisconsin)

the Michigan Shore-to-Shore Trail 230 miles across the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, that runs between Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan to Oscoda on Lake Huron roughly adjacent to hwy 72 It is open to horseback riders and hikers but not bicycles. Seems like they could give bikers a week in spring, and one in the fall, and not allow horses.... just how damn many people are riding horses across states anyway?

The trail, going from west to east, travels through the Boardman River valley and follows the Au Sable River for about 50 miles. The trail was developed by trail riders in 1962 and travels through mixed hardwood and conifer forests. Public campgrounds are located throughout the route.
