20 mule team hauling ore from Borate through Mule Canyon (Calico) to Daggett, Circa (pre-) 1890s)

https://www.facebook.com/neatoldphotos.m.lucas2/

These "big teams" pulled massive wagons hauling borax from the Harmony Borax Works near Furnace Creek to the railhead near Mojave, a grueling 165 mile, ten day trip across primitive roads. Although the teams only ran for six years--1883 to 1889--they have made an enduring impression of the Old West.

This is primarily due to a successful advertising campaign promoting 20-Mule-Team Borax Soap. Today you may see two of the last remaining wagons here in Death Valley. One is in front of the Furnace Creek Ranch and the other is at Harmony Borax Works.

1960s and 70's artsy gas stations

1920s and 30s gas stations in California, some simple, but mostly they are neglected and abandoned

it's about time... the labor workers at the Philly Intl Airport, they've had enough, and are going to strike during the Dem Natl. Convention.

While police, hospitals and businesses are preparing to work overtime for the thousands of visitors descending upon Philadelphia for next week’s Democratic National Convention, one group is planning a picket line.

Baggage handlers, airport security workers, wheelchair attendants and aircraft cleaners at Philadelphia International Airport have voted461-5 in favor of striking during the DNC. They want to unionize and want higher wages, better benefits and work schedules.

According to service workers union SEIU 32BJ, the airport workers are employed by subcontractors who work for the airlines. You just know they are shafted on pay and benefits.

Flashback Friday gas prices, thanks to Hagerty Car Ins Co. the gas was priced the same as the year of the vehicle that drove up

Hagerty Insurance, as a tribute to the classic cars and the good ol days of cheap gas, gave a few classic car owners in Beverly Hills California a chance to top off their tanks at throwback prices last Friday, from 8am to 11am, in honor of the seventh annual Collector Car Appreciation Day.

Taking over the classic 76 gas station in Beverly Hills, at Crescent and Santa Monica, Hagerty transformed the swooping structure into an old-fashioned service station. https://www.facebook.com/events/1775523609336905/

The cost of each driver's fuel was whatever the average gasoline price was when his or her car first his the road. The owner of one 1970 Ford Mustang, for example, paid 70 cents a gallon to top off his tank. A guy in a '55 Chevy Bel Air, meanwhile, shelled out just 29 cents a gallon.

Hagerty also gave away 100 $50 gas cards in a Facebook give away event, selected randomly from everyone who tagged their post @HagertyClassicCars , in honor of Classic Car Appreciation Day.

Out of 700 people that entered for them, that's pretty good odds of winning

If you are wondering about the swoopy roof on this building, it's in the Googie architectural style

The canopy was designed in 1965 for the Los Angeles International Airport. When the airport plans changed, the canopy was installed here for Jack Colker's Union 76 station.

how fast are lawyers with a cease and desist? "The Drive" may have stumbled onto that answer when it ran an article titled "The World's Best-Selling Car Is Worthless"

in the daily email blast from "The Drive" was this click bait... and I wanted to know why they felt the Toyota Corolla is worthless, so I clicked... and ...

it would be comical if the upside down car was a Corolla...

the story is no longer even listed in the contents of their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/thedrive/

Vermont is the latest state to say that folks who rescue an animal — or a child — from a dangerously hot vehicle will be freed of civil liability.

Vermont is the latest state to say that folks who rescue an animal — or a child — from a dangerously hot vehicle will be freed of civil liability. That means that you can smash a car window under these specific circumstances without having to pay for the damage.

As with the other states, you can’t just go swing a hammer whenever you please. To comply with the law, you must make sure the car is actually locked before breaking any windows. You’ve also got to have the reasonable, good faith belief that the pet (or kid) is in imminent harm, and use no more force than is really required.

Call 911 or otherwise alert law enforcement before effecting your rescue, then stay with the rescued pet or child until the cops arrive.

And leave a note on the car letting the owner know what you’ve done and why. The law provides no guidance as to how colorful your language may be in such notes; we expect you can come up with something powerfully vivid, should the need arise.

Tennessee, Florida, and Wisconsin are the other states to have hot car laws in effect now; all got these laws within the last year. Ohio’s law kicks in in August.

Protesting... to be effective, you must be noticed. Closing down a freeway? Very much noticed.(just as MLK did from Montgomery to Selma) This morning the I 35 in Minneapolis was closed by protesters during rush hour traffic

when interviewed the head of the Minnesota State Patrol (highway patrol) never mentioned any law being broken that applies to protests on a freeway. He said the usual blather about endangering motorists (um, people are dangerous to cars? No, not so much) and how inconvenient it was for police for protesters to keep the police away from the donut shops... darn shame.

The group of protesters, which calls themselves the Coalition to Wake Your Ass Up, released a statement following the shutdown, saying in part that they condemn the ongoing killing of black lives across the country.

“The coalition…believes this shut down reinforces our belief that comfort and business as usual must be disrupted until substantive changes occur in our city and throughout the country,” the statement said in part. “We support community-led alternatives, solutions, and programs to protect our communities. On this day, we support the workers attempting to make a living but we also know that sacrifices must be made if we hope to live decently together.”

well said.

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/07/13/protesters-i-35-w-shutdown/

Remember recent history. Shutting down a road for protest is a nobel action rewarded by history.
When the protest march for black voting rights took place on March 21st 1965, the governor (Wallace) wouldn't man up and do the right thing, but the president did.

President Johnson sent in the US Army and National Guard under Federal command, as well as FBI and Federal Marshals to protect the marchers, from who? State Troopers and local volunteer officers of the local sheriff's department who blocked the road.

State police and sheriffs departments are not historically kind to civil rights, they want a nice quiet day for donuts and coffee.

The marchers in 1965 walked to the state capitol, and 25,000 people went into the capitol building to show support for voting rights.

That marching route is now memorialized as the "Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights Trail" and is designated a US National Historic Trail. That road is a state highway, US 80.

Seems that our current times of police misconduct, over aggressive behavior, and shooting unarmed innocent people who have committed no crime is a just cause and good reason for citizens to question the lack of government leadership, accountability, and to bring attention to the problem the mayors, governors, congressmen, and president are doing nothing to solve.

While the elected representatives of the people refuse to demand that the police act professional, the protesters are going to refuse to be quiet.

It seems we have a civil rights movement in our age. It's not the Vietnam War protest, it's not the womens suffrage voting rights movement... it's police malfeasance movement.

the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension admits breath tests are more than 3 times as inaccurate as urine or blood tests, potentially negating hundreds of pending DWI cases were drivers were close to the legal limit

Yesterday, in court, for the first time, a BCA scientist revealed that they are now willing to share just how inaccurate Minnesota’s breath tests actually are. The number they cited was basically “0.01,” an uncertainty figure that specifically applies to tests around the 0.08 level, and more at higher levels.

Consider this fact, helpfully provided by the Department of Public Safety: annually, Minnesota sees approximately 2,000 drivers who provide a breath sample between 0.08 and 0.09 and get charged with a DWI. With this new information, those drivers are very much "not guilty."

It’s not often that science prevails in a legal battle, especially when government scientists are doing their best to convince judges that the science doesn’t matter.

 Today it matters.

a fabricator with K&N Engineering wanted a different look for his 1995 Lincoln Town Car

In 2010 Contreras drove the car 1,600 miles to Vaca Limousine and asked the staff to create a custom car that had the look of a 1934 Ford.

It took Vaca about two months to convert the car and it remained at the Vaca plant for two years and displayed at car shows in Mexico.
