Charlie Hunnam is back on a motorcycle, as a fugitive in 1980s Bombay, in Apple's series debuting in October, Shantaram

'Shantaram' was a semi autobiographical book by author Gregory David Roberts, who went from being an idealistic philosophy student and activist, to becoming a heroin addict, armed robber and part of the organized crime scene in Bombay.

Project Origin at Royal Enfield created the just-unveiled replica of the company's very first motorcycle, of 1901.

"The brand's famous slogan, 'Since 1901', is a testament to the replica's importance and rich heritage to Royal Enfield. The year 1901 also carries considerable weight in the motorcycle world as it makes Royal Enfield the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in production to this day."

So, sure, the 1901 Royal Enfield motorcycle is in the history books, along with a famous photograph of it. But no actual remaining 1901 Royal Enfield motorcycle is known to exist.

Royal Enfield historian and a member of the global brand team, Gordon May hasn't found one, and he has been watching for one for 20 years.

There were no surviving design blueprints or technical drawings which gave any usable reference to how the motor-bicycle was constructed. All that remained were a few period photographs, some promotional advertisements and a couple of illustrated news articles from 1901 that gave some basic graphic clues and information as to how the motor-bicycle would have looked and might have functioned.

Gordon was making an on-line historical presentation for Royal Enfield employees about June, 2020, when he challenged the company to recreate the iconic missing motorcycle.

Five minutes after he ended the talk his phone rang. It was Simon Warburton, now chief program manager at Royal Enfield, in effect accepting the challenge.

Is the resulting Project Origin a precise replica? No. For one thing, it's metric, for the convenience of the engineers and their computers.

The Royal Enfield Flying Flea, a WW2 motorcycle dropped with the troops for fast mobilization after landing (thanks Stephen!)

Complete with its own parachute and packing cage, the Flying Flea could be dropped from an aircraft along with the troops provided a means of motorized battlefield transport not previously available.

The Flea was fitted into a steel tubular cage called the ‘Bird Cage’, which had a parachute attached to it. The cage aided in packing turning handlebars easily

One neat feature of the “Flying Flea” was its girder front end that was actually ‘sprung’ by thick rubber bands similar to cargo straps

When at Pebble Beach, make friends, you never know where it might lead to, as Claus Muller was delighted to find out, he was invited to tour a private collection of a Maharajah

Above, the collection is partly in a roundhouse, I think it's a great way to access a large collection for a driver, I have no idea if the architect was informed that the display factor would be important

The 1914 Rolls Royce that sparked the tour invitation, was brought to the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours

Above, the original Shell gas station that is inside the palace, as the only gas engine vehicles of the time were owned by the Maharajah. Makes sense!

While visiting India, the author of the website was also interested in seeing the local repair shops to contrast them with what he is familr with in Germany

See or read the entire post about the week in India and tour of the private collection at http://www.classicmotourist.blogspot.de/2013/03/indien.html which I learned about from http://www.carguychronicles.com/2013/04/classic-cars-in-india-rajasthan.html
