America's Antarctic research station is need of a few good wrench-turners.

Scientists at McMurdo Station, the main American research station on the continent, rely on a fleet of snowmobiles, trucks, and aircraft to get around. And they need mechanics to keep those vehicles running.

Amentum, a government contractor that helps staff McMurdo Station, currently has a number of job openings for mechanics at the remote site. A typical one, for a light-vehicle and snowmobile mechanic, requires a minimum two years’ experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, although technical-school training, ASE certification, and experience working at a dealership and/or in a polar environment are preferred.

The annual base salary when in Australia starts from:
Mechanic $86,147 per annum
Senior Mechanic $92,705 per annum

Base salary + additional allowances when in Antarctica starts from:
Mechanic $156,684 per annum
Senior Mechanic $163,242 per annum

In Antarctica a traverse crew is transporting 275,000 gallons of fuel from McMurdo Station to Amundsen Scott South Pole Station. The fuel is in bladders tied to urethane sheets which are fixed to a drawbar assembly and slide over the snow surface.

Running 10-12 hours a day, it takes 25-30 days outbound and 10-14 returning. A good day loaded is 40-50 miles. The route is 900 miles of mostly flat with a 7000 foot climb up a glacier from basically sea level to the Polar Plateau . The climb requires 2 tractors for each load and shuttling the loads to the top.

Thank you Marc!
