won the car, drove the car, wrecked the car

A couple of days ago, Dream Car Giveaways gave away a red Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX FQ-320 model with 70,000 miles on the odometer, a full service history, just "a few mild mods," a recent repaint, and the equivalent of around $1,400 on the hood for running costs.

Legendary all-wheel drive, just two liters under the hood, the next couple of oil changes paid for. What could go wrong, right?

90 miles later, the 27 year old lead foot who won the Evo lost control smashing the hell out of both the front and rear  ends at 140 mph

from filthy to fantastic, the coffee and donut video of the day. This was a 9 hour cleaning job

Things I'm super impressed with,

The hand drill with a round brush used to agitate the dirt in the floor mats.... that is smart!

and this stuff, because like I posted a couple months ago, there is so much stuff sticking to my commuters paint, and I didn't realize until now, that it was rusty iron, which makes sense when compared to what I've seen on my paint. Now I know there is something that directly deals with it

use this for getting pet hair out of seats and carpet

by the way, before buying this stuff yourself, consider what a detailer will charge you to clean your car, versus what all the products will cost. It might be cheaper, and a huge time saver to get the pro to clean your car occassionally

this was a complete surprise to see drive by and park, a right hand drive Mitsubishi turbo diesel 4x4 Pajero

the owner was really nice to talk to and told me he was talked into buying it, and that it only gets 17 mpg, from a 170 hp 2.5 liter engine, but he's a fan of the easy switching into 4 wheel drive without having to stop and get out of the vehicle

Nissan is seizing on a more than 40 percent plunge in Mitsubishi Motors’ market value to gain significant control, it just bought 14% more of Mitsubishi, than Mitsubishi owned.... 34%N to 20%M

The purchase makes Nissan the single largest Mitsubishi Motors’ shareholder.

The companies plan to sign an agreement by May 25 in which Nissan can name four directors to Mitsubishi Motors’ board, including the chairman.

The transaction eases concerns about the viability of a Japanese automaker which has dealings with 7,777 companies affecting 410,000 people.

Mitsubishi Motors has manipulated fuel economy data of four minicar models, two of which are supplied to Nissan, and improperly tested other Japan vehicles since 1991.

After overstating the fuel economy of its minicars by as much as 10 percent, Mitsubishi Motors faces the prospect of compensating owners of those vehicles for their shortcomings in performance. It also may have to pay back Japan’s government for tax rebates that its minicars shouldn’t have been eligible for.

Mitsubishi admits to lying about mileage numbers, the latest in a series of scandals plaguing the troubled Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has been falsifying its fuel economy numbers, the company’s president acknowledged on Tuesday.

To boost their mileage numbers for the pint-sized models sold in Japan that compete largely on fuel economy, Mitsubishi engineers apparently relied on data compiled by running the affected vehicles through American fuel economy tests. Those procedures involve extensive highway simulations to account for the fact that U.S. motorists drive longer distances and at higher speeds than their Japanese counterparts.

The stop-and-go driving in cities like Tokyo typically reduces fuel economy.

Since the cheating apparently dates back to at least 1991, industry observers believe Mitsubishi was likely to have falsified fuel economy numbers for other models. And the scandal also puts a fresh spotlight on what has become a spiraling epidemic of deceitfulness by automakers around the world, including the ongoing investigation of Volkswagen for admittedly cheating on diesel emissions tests, as well as General Motors, which covered up a defective ignition switch for a decade.

This isn't the first time this has happened. Several years ago, Korean siblings Hyundai and Kia revealed they had improperly run fuel economy tests, resulting in shortfalls of up to six miles per gallon for a range of models including the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Soul. The automaker paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation and legal settlements. Ford Motor Co. subsequently compensated owners when it misstated fuel economy numbers on some of its models.

The automaker has suffered a series of setbacks over the past decade. In 2002, a woman walking down the sidewalk in Tokyo was killed when a wheel flew off a Mitsubishi truck. The vehicle had already been repaired under a secret warranty program meant to hide problems with a variety of the maker’s components, including brakes, clutches, and fuel tanks.

Was the Lancer Evo a great car? Or merely a cult classic for 4 door Japanese car enthusiasts?

As far as rally cars go with better records, it's beat badly by the Lancia Delta with 10 championships in the WRC http://www.therichest.com/sports/racing-sports/the-top-5-cars-of-the-world-rally-championship/5/

and the Lancer isn't even in the top 5, and it's only #18 on the greatest Japanese cars list, http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/100-greatest-japanese-cars-of-all-time.html while a Prius is #1

Also it falls below a flippin' Citroen on http://www.ebay.com/gds/Top-5-Cars-of-the-World-Rally-Championship-/10000000204640564/g.html  and I did not see any mention of it in the history of the past decade and a half... hence Mitsubishi is killing off the obsolete non-competitive Evo. Ironically, evolution is the survival of the fittest, which it hasn't been, since before the Y2k scare.

Nor do I even consider it an originator of the 4 door sports car genre, that was set in the 20's by Duesenburg, (see #8 below) in the 70's by the Hemi 6 pack Charger in Austalia.

It barely made the top 100 list of greatest cars ever, at #92, and was slapped around silly by the #41 1961 Lincoln and even (gasp of horror) #60 the Chrysler mini van, #73 a Ford station wagon, and some Jeeps #47,#65, and #91, plus the VW type 2 microbus/van #79, and maybe the worst insult, the Ford Taurus #77. http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/the-100-greatest-cars-of-all-time.html

So, anyway, Mitsubishi finally had enough, and the 2016 is the last of the Lancer Evo
