listening to Smartless podcast, and they have a guest, Bill Simmons, whom I've never heard of as I don't give a shit about sports (this guy Bill seems to have covered everything from high school to pro, to documentaries and books)
He went to university, got a degree, his dad (a teacher) asked him what he was going to do next... and he had a "I dunno" reply. They had a 50/50 on him even getting a job. So he applied to 3 journalism schools, got his masters, and then worked at the Boston Herald, for 3 years doing useless grunt work like getting the the chinese food orders, and left to be a bartender.
That's how useless a masters is.
3 of ex girlfriends have masters. Only one went into a career in that field, the other had such a miniscule job availability that she could get a job in forensic pathology in the county, the other had a passion for theater (very fun stuff) but there really aren't jobs in being a theater actor. Not that pay the rent. Ended up being a patent lawyers paralegal making 40 an hour.
Bill got around to podcasting in the 90s, followed his passion for sports, would up founding some company that competed with ESPN and sold it for 150 million. Journalism isn't lucrative, but for a few people, can lead to some interesting places (like creating 30 for 30, which went on to win Peabodys, Academy, Emmy and Critics choice awards

Its weird,
ReplyDeletesome jobs require a degree, just to screen the applicants, Progressive Insurance requires a degree, to be a claims agent. my cousin is one, works from home in his pajamas, for $75K a year. his degree is in history.
Enterprise rent a car requires a degree to work the sales counter.
as for the masters, my friend has a masters degree in mathematics, and works as an accountant, and makes good money.
some degrees are useless, some are quite valuable. the company I work for is always hiring people with degrees in science and engineering, Environemtal science, civil engineering, geology degrees etc, , the degree is required by the state to sign the forms that get sent to the govt.
