Out of 13,000 AI-generated citations in Athens Greece, officers reviewed 5,500 and only approved 400, yet officials are calling the rollout a success
Of those reviewed, just 400 were judged valid. The other 5,100 were thrown out, split between 3,800 speeding violations and 1,300 covering mobile phone use, seatbelt non-compliance, and similar offenses.
The two piles were rejected for completely different reasons.
Police officers found that the software routinely mistook dark objects for smartphones and got tripped up by unrelated driver gestures, things like taking a vape hit or simply changing gears.
In several cases, the cameras flagged non-existent front-seat passengers for failing to wear a seatbelt, triggering automated notices for empty seats. In others, drivers were fined simply because their dark shirts blended into the seatbelt strap, confusing the camera’s visual sensors.
The 3,800 speeding citations were dropped automatically because they relied on average-speed calculations, a method Greece currently has no legislative framework to support, so that batch isn’t a software failure at all.

Springfield (Oregon) Police Department said it will cover all Flock automatic license plate recognition cameras in the city in the coming days as it prepares to remove them.
Deputy Chief George Crolly said in a statement. “Given what we have learned, we do not have confidence that the current system provides the level of control and assurance we require.”
The announcement comes after the Eugene Police Department reported vulnerabilities and limitations in its own Flock ALPR system that raised concerns about operational needs, data security and community expectations.

these are the new method of hidden camera government surveillance.... I'm not a fan.
The Border Patrol has for years hidden details of its license plate reader program, trying to keep any mention of the program out of court documents and police reports, former officials say, even going so far as to propose dropping charges rather than risk revealing any details about the placement and use of their covert license plate readers. Readers are often disguised along highways in traffic safety equipment like drums and barrels.
I'm all for the govt posting military on the border, and the shored of the the Atlantic, Pacific, the Gulf of Texas, the St Lawrence River, and preventing people from entering the country and stopping anything that comes over the line that is our national boundary.
But this license plate shit? On top of having computers read our every text, every email, every website, and listen to every phone call... and none of that has prevented drug deals from being a bajillion dollar business in every of the 50 states, proves it's all been useless. It didn't prevent the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. school shootings, etc.
So, monitoring every license plate... has that resulted in car insurance fraud arrests? Nope. Expired car registration tickets? Nope. Stolen cars getting found? Nope.

Now tell me why New York doesn't just put a cop on any one of those intersections, or, take some legal action on these drivers, like, revoke their drivers license, then impound their vehicles?
A Washington state trial court has shot down local municipalities’ effort to keep automated license plate reader (ALPR) data secret.
"The Flock images generated by the Flock cameras...are public records," the court wrote in its ruling. "Flock camera images are created and used to further a governmental purpose. The Flock images created by the cameras located in Stanwood and Sedro-Woolley were paid for by Stanwood and Sedro Wooley [sic] and were generated for the benefit of Stanwood and Sedro-Woolley."
The contract language notwithstanding, officials in Washington attempted to restrict public access by claiming that video footage stored on Flock’s servers and requests for that information would constitute the generation of a new record. This part of the argument claimed that any information that was gathered but not otherwise accessed by law enforcement, including thousands of images taken every day by the agency’s 14 Flock ALPR cameras, had nothing to do with government business, would generate a new record, and should not be subject to records requests. The cities shut off their Flock cameras while the litigation was ongoing.
If the court had ruled in favor of the cities’ claim, police could move to store all their data — from their surveillance equipment and otherwise — on private company servers and claim that it's no longer accessible to the public.
In 2017, the California Supreme Court sided with EFF and ACLU in a case arguing that “the license plate data of millions of law-abiding drivers, collected indiscriminately by police across the state, are not ‘investigative records’ that law enforcement can keep secret.”

Toronto Mayor mentioned in the news that vehicles assigned to Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet ministers were caught by speed cameras more than 20 times, saying: “No wonder they don’t like speed cameras.” (They are only money makers, and speed bumps are more effective at the purported purpose, slowing drivers)
the Mayor of Toronto is trying to save the money making automated speed enforcement program, and brought up, on the news, that vehicles assigned to Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet ministers have been caught by speed cameras 23 speed camera in the past three years.
Premier Ford is planning to introduce legislation to ban speed cameras, which he has repeatedly called a “tax grab” by municipalities.
In a separate instance, a minister-assigned vehicle was recorded at more than 150 km/h by the car’s internal monitoring system, triggering stunt driving notifications to the Ministry of Transport.
They don’t work to slow drivers down and are less effective than speed bumps

it was easy to predict that as soon as govts got greedy, and went tech to fine more drivers for speeding, instead of hiring more cops to simply do their damn job.... that someone would hack the cameras, or the computers they connect to, or they would simply malfunction, like all computers to (turn it off, than back on, and reboot it... why is that always the answer?)
Nearly 16,000 tickets were handed out with over $700,000 being generated in a city southeast of Orlando, a profit of $347,535 for the City of Palm Bay before it was shut down in August.
8,000 tickets have been declared void, at $100 each
The cameras were initially installed as part of a scheme to catch drivers speeding in school zones. However, it was soon revealed that the cameras were placed too close to the roadside, which led to faulty readings and potentially constitutes a violation of state law.

Ontario drivers are voicing growing frustration over the widespread use of speed cameras, as a new petition gains momentum in Brampton calling for their removal. There's only 150. Problem? What problem? They are installing 35 more
Ontario first authorized the use of ASE cameras in 2017 to improve road safety in school and community zones where speed limits are under 80 km/h.
Speed camera enforcement has been controversial in cities across Ontario. In Toronto, a camera on Parkside Drive was cut down for the sixth time since November, even after another surveillance camera was installed to catch vandals. In Vaughan, the program was paused after it issued over 32,000 tickets in just three weeks.
Some municipalities, like York Region, have brought in over $11.5 million since launching their programs, raising questions about the role of revenue in the use of speed cameras.
Not that anyone questions that the real purpose of the cameras is an unlimited income stream from the working class, to the politicians who need more money to spend on special interest projects, to please campaign donors

Speeding “scameras” make it next to impossible for drivers to challenge their tickets.
The companies that provide speeding cameras to local police often handle fine collections and contested tickets, leaving no local avenue for appeals by motorists who want to challenge their citations. They include signage to let motorists know they are being monitored.
Plus, cities and towns must provide a local administrative process for motorists to appeal their tickets.
But because a handful of municipalities still won’t follow the rules, Cathey came back this year with what he’s called “a bill with teeth.” If approved, police chiefs and municipal leaders who continue to ignore the requirements can be charged with malfeasance in office. The penalty for that crime can be up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Tallahassee's elementary schools are the most lucrative speed camera area's I've heard of... just 2 cameras racked up 315 thou in 2 months. It's not about safety. It's about money
Over the course of the year, 23 more cameras are expected to go up and join the cause. And based on last month's numbers, if all the cameras are up and running, Tallahassee could see around 40,000 tickets per month, which would bring in roughly $1.5 million for the city.
If drivers don't get the message to slow down, this means the city could be earning $18.6 million a year with every camera capturing around 1,590 school zone speeders each month.
The DC Department of Transportation added a speed camera on the 1400 Block of Bladensburg Road in March... THEN they lowered the speed limit in July. The number of tickets issued skyrocketed. It never was about safety, it was about 1.1 million dollars in fines
Between March and December 2024, more than 26,000 citations were issued by that camera and the city collected $1,142,645 in fines.
