Not even 2 percent of cars registered in Japan are over 30 years old because (the article from The Drive states) it's prohibitively expensive to keep old cars registered. That's another reason this Corolla is so special, but not the best one.
The Corolla served as a daily driver since 24-year-old Asada Shogo spent two full years' pay on the sedan in 1969, when he used his car for dating, which led to him meeting his wife. The two eventually started a family, which the Corolla served reliably, taking them on their honeymoon and even ferrying home their infant daughter from the hospital.
Shogo's daughter recreated the photo her parents took of her riding home from the hospital at birth in the passenger seat, this time with her own daughter—Shogo's granddaughter.
In 53 years as a daily driver the Corolla rolled over it's odometer 5 times, for a total mileage of 350,000 miles. It made it that far because Shogo maintained it fastidiously, using OEM parts wherever possible
Toyota received the car in early July to put it on display at the Toyota City Museum when it opens in 2024.
