I found that these engines were used to compress natural gas to pump it through pipelines. This one has 2 cylinders in line with each other. The pistons are on the same linkage and the cylinders fire on both sides of the pistons, similar to the pressure in a steam engine pushing the cylinders.
Here is a tandem Snow engine owned by the Northwest Michigan Engine and Threshers Club. It made 1100 hp at 95 rpm.
You wouldn't have even had to look that up if I'd remembered to include the photo of the sing that is on the wall over this one (now added) But thanks for filling me in, I hadn't read the sign, didn't know what it did, and dang, that is some serious horsepower!
