You aren't going to appreciate this on this small of a scale, so, if you could use a healthy dose of amazement, click on http://www.streamlinerschedules.com/extras/streamliners_across_america.pdf
you can look around in his website for specific trains, info about them, and their schedules, and though I haven't seen, or figured out where on his site it is, he said " I wanted to see where the trains went on their routes. The layered PDF allows the user to turn on/off all the routes so you can make your own connections."

If you download the PDF, any PDF reader should be able to turn the routes on/off. It was fun making this map to see where the train routes went across our big country.
ReplyDeletethe ability isn't the issue... the HOW is the issue. So, can you describe a short little how to on turning one on or off?
DeleteI am not kidding, this makes the 4th time I've looked around for instructions or clues on how to turn on or off layers, and NOTHING but repetitions of how easy it is to do so... without an actual word about HOW. That's not frustrating at all.
DeleteThe PDF is built on layers, like Photoshop. After you download the file and open it in any PDF reader, look for an icon that opens the layers panel. (The layers icon generally look like three sheets of paper.) Once the panel is open, every layer (route) will be listed as "on"--now you can turn off the layers you don't want to see.
ReplyDeleteI don't think most web-based PDF viewers allow the user control over layers.
The instructions on the "about" page are not very clear, you're right.
I hope this helps, Jesse.
Well, allright, then for starters, you need to explain how to open it, like you're talking to someone who has never used a computer.
DeleteStep one, open website X, step two, download X, and I do mean get specific. Doe they download the map, the store, the zoo, the buffalo? Get seriously fundamental specific. I could tell you about the table of the nuclides and how to use it, and you'd get through it. But not "download and turn off layers. I believe you'll understand if you look at a nuclide table. Anyway, step 3, open PDF, step 4... and right there is as far as I could get this time.
You've made a cool thing, don't let that go to waste by ignoring that your potential users are not going to intuitively click on the right things by logical progression, all the way along until they've mastered this.
Help them out.
