The new GTP Pilot Sport Endurance tires on the cars competing in the GTP class look a bit different. The tread pattern is the talking point to get free publicity for the 50% recycled material tires factoid, which is interesting.

The texture is called the “Vision” pattern and it is designed to help with initial warmup, since the cars of IMSA do not utilize tire warmers.

These new GTP treads are composed of 50% recycled or renewable material, but last just as long during hard driving stints, including the double stints that often take place at big races like the 24 at Daytona.

If you wonder just what was all the hub bub was about, well, Paris in the 1920s was having a grand time, and Citroen even had a 1/4 million light bulbs installed on the Eiffel tower for advertising in 1925

But, due to the stock market collapse, and a LOT of competition from other French car makers, in 1934 Citroën went bankrupt. 

Not just because of the financial crisis but also because of Citroën’s rivalry with Renault and the lengthy and costly development of the Traction Avant that had crippled the company and arguably also its boss. Fortunately, Michelin stepped in and saved the company.

Michelin rarely missteps, but they tested their tires wrong, and now have to recall a 1/2 million snow tires

Nearly 550,000 light truck Michelin tires have been recalled. The Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires with DOT numbers 0117 through 1423 have been affected. 

The affected tires feature the Alpine Symbol, marking them as snow tires—however, these do not fit the classification for the symbol. The company clarifies that “the Alpine Symbol is depicted by a snowflake inside a three peaked mountain outline.”

The reason why is due to initial tire testing done with the wrong tire pressure. Only after further testing was the issue revealed.

In their voluntary recall, Michelin states that the recalled products “do not meet the traction requirements for snow tires” and, thus, “fail to comply” with federal regulations.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also explains that “the tires are labeled as snow tires, but do not have sufficient traction to perform in all snow weather conditions.”

The tires are typically found on Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster, Volkswagen Crafter, Nissan NV200, Chevrolet City Express and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles.

Michelin had a very convincing early demonstration of why people should buy a pneumatic tire... they could take a ride on the solid rim, and feel every tiny pebble and stone, or have an enjoyable ride in the chair with the air filled tire instead

The installation of Michelin in the Salon du Cycle of 1895 attracted the attention of the public and the magazines of the time:

The Michelin wheel-go-round, which delights both young and old.
Climb quickly onto the movable chairs and try to choose well.

One of the chairs is equipped with an iron wheel and the other driven with a wheel covered by a pneumatic tire.
Pity the unhappy man who chooses the iron wheel because, at the littlest obstacle of those found on the carousel track, he shakes and rocks as a peasant does in his cart. And what a noisy racket!

On the contrary, the chair with the pneumatic wheel circulates around the track quietly, without jostling and in silence.

A lesson that clearly shows how tires have made bicycle transport progress and how they will be useful to automobiles.

If I went to goodwood, you'd be seeing photos of EVERYTHING, dozens of photos per car, and building, and people dressed in era correct costumes, and races... it would be nuts.

Via Retro was started in 2012 when 2 sites that were only in Danish, merged. Weblogs SpectraMOTO.com and MotorRetro.com, both of which despite the .com addresses were only published in Danish.

However, ever since the initial conception, ViaRETRO also featured an English version, including selected articles from the Danish section and expanding with unique content on a regular basis. Then in August 2017, close friend of ViaRETRO, Anders Bilidt, got involved working purely on the English site, in order to expand the content with more frequent articles than previous.
