California Governor Newsom is in a spat with Chevron over who is to blame for the state’s high gas prices, and is urging drivers not to fill up at Chevron stations over Memorial Day weekend.

“Pro tip: unbranded gas comes from the same refineries, storage tanks, and pipelines, and it meets the same state standards to keep your engine running clean,” Newsom’s office posted Thursday on X. “Big Oil is already making billions off Trump’s Iran War; don’t let them rip you off even more by overpaying for the brand name.”

Newsom’s office cited an analysis by a group within the state’s energy commission, which oversees the oil and gas industry, that found that Chevron averaged more than 60 to 80 cents per gallon above unbranded alternatives.

As of Friday, the average price of a gallon of regular gas in California stood at $6.13, the only state in the U.S. charging more than $6 a gallon and the highest in the nation by more than 30 cents, according to the American Automobile Association.

Notice the 20 cents between each grade, on base, vs the bottom price sign, where greed is getting the better of them, and they are taking advantage of people who believe they must get the most expensive grade. I don't believe that's necessary unless you have a computer in your car that limits the power based on the knock sensors reacting to the octane level

the major difference between Unleaded 88 and Unleaded 87. Unleaded 88, also called E15, contains 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline, whereas the Unleaded 87 you are familiar with is a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline. 

that increase in ethanol content may result in a reduction in your MPGs. It's simply because gasoline is more energy-dense than ethanol, so the lower gasoline content can result in lower fuel economy. 

 pre-2001 vehicles should not use Unleaded 88 or E15 gas is that their fuel systems are not designed to handle the higher alcohol content of these fuels. Some issues related to the use of higher-ethanol-content fuel in vehicles not designed for it include clogged fuel filters, fuel tank corrosion, swelling or cracking of plastic fuel system parts, difficult starting, and failed fuel hoses.

 yup, the higher octane and diesel is now over 7 a gallon in Carlsbad (near the old Carlsbad NHRA dragstrip location on Palomar Airport Road today, and it was 40 cents more expensive across the street

How important is it to look for the gas station that isn't price gouging you? This one is 1.50 more a gallon than others within a mile.

Hope said it is a personal decision whether consumers involve their own insurance companies, but highly recommends starting the claims process with the gas station.

can wood pulp be turned into fuel for planes and other aircraft?

Starting this year, airports within the European Union must use at least 2 percent of what’s known as Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF, within their fuel mix. The United States does not currently impose such requirements, but the EU is set to increase its mandated SAF percentages in coming years.

SAF is an alternative to fossil fuel, and the goal of those requirements is to cut back on carbon emissions. SAF can include biofuels, such as energy made from pulped wood.

“There is going to be an increasing demand for this type of fuel, and we are right at the forefront here in Wisconsin,” Felzkowski said during a Monday morning news conference at the state Capitol.

A German company called Synthec Fuels is looking to run the plant in partnership with Wisconsin-based Johnson Timber, sponsors of the legislation said.

GasBuddy forecasts a national average of $3.02 per gallon over the holiday, matching last year’s price. Both 2024 and 2025 now share the distinction of marking the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices since the pandemic, when the national average hit $3.39 a gallon in 2021 and $3.56 in 2022.

Historically, self-service was banned in many states throughout the country. The first ban was passed in Indiana in 1930. By 1948, nine states had outlawed self-service. (Thank you George!)

With a little looking around for the cheapest gas in the City, I found these two stations that are nearly a dollar a gallon less than the average price of the usual exit ramp overprice big name brand corporate gas

it won't surprise anyone that gas prices are rigged to gouge people on the island in the middle of San Diego bay, simply because only lazy rich people will pay it unflinchingly, everyone else will save at least 10 dollars every tank by driving over the bridge to gas a dollar less a gallon
