John Wayne and Claudette Colbert in "Without Reservations" 1946, with a 1933 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A that was a Hollywood rental

was reportedly driven by James Dean in Giant, released in 1956. It may have also appeared in 1941’s The Wolf Man, 1942’s Invisible Agent, 1946’s Without Reservations, and 1951’s Mr. Imperium

It graced the greens at Pebble Beach in 2017, took the Best in Show European award at the Atlanta Concours d’Elegance last October, and earned the Governor’s Cup (Best of Show) at the 2019 The Elegance at Hershey.

1924 Isotta-Fraschini Tipo 8A Imperial Landaulet, discovered in the basement of the Isotta-Fraschini storage warehouse. Made and used as a factory demonstration and chauffeurs training car

According to the Societa Isotta Fraschini, it is the earliest known example of the company’s most famous and prestigious model, the Tipo 8A, and may well have been the first built.

It was bodied by Cesare Sala of Milan, one of Italy’s premiere coachbuilders and one with a very close relationship to Isotta Fraschini, as Oreste Fraschini, a member of the founding family, occupied a seat on Sala’s board.

Subsequently, around 1926, solid side-mount covers and special interior woodwork were fitted by Carrozzeria Riva, whose secondary coach tag is found directly under Sala’s on the body. This is believed to have been the only Isotta Fraschini that had two different Classic Era coachbuilders involved in its construction.

As these cars were frequently driven by chauffeurs, Isotta Fraschini held training sessions for future drivers and used this particular chassis as the sample and training vehicle. Isotta Fraschini afterward put the nearly new automobile into storage at a warehouse, offsite of the factory, thus saving it from destruction when the Works was obliterated during World War II.

The car is still, for all intents and purposes, “new”—the only Isotta Fraschini that has remained that way since the Classic Era. It was bought by the company that purchased all the Isotta Fraschini assets in 1993, then bought by a car flipper, who sold it at auction with RM Sothebys this spring

The tires had been replaced about 35 years ago (while it sat in storage) and two of the originals were placed in the side cowl spare tire holders

Il Drago Ruggente, an Isotta Frachini 27 liter, V12, 800hp engine came from a Caproni bomber, frame of a Delage. The plane came to Sweden in December 1940 and was scrapped in 1943.

An oil change is 55 liters of 20/50 zinc rich oil. Imagine how long it takes to empty 55 bottles.... and that is just the one oil change. 8 gallons of gas per 6 miles driven. 0.75 mpg...

After a long interview, so it was time to start. I jump up in the Drakensberg. Starts petrol pump and ask Magnus open air valve, while I start spinning the starter magnet and waiting for a bang when kicks off the engine, but it is not! There was only a small puff of smoke, and that was all. Ungrateful Drake, with all the care it received prior to the start.

We took a quick decision to pour in some extra gasoline directly into the carburetors. It may take a real shot (6th 98 octane with wormwood), in order to get a grumpy old man. Speaker asked what happened and I explained that he is a bit grumpy and need a shot, all older men need to get started. He was not slow to instämma- the Yes Indeed!

Ten minutes later it was the pressure of the air tanks and into the bloodstream at the top! And so we were finally ready to start again. Before we started, so I said to Bo to check that no one is standing behind the Dragon when we kick off. Partly because the smoke, but also for the flames. Magnus opened the air valve and I started the petrol pump and started cranking the starter magnet. 2 seconds later so pulled engine running noise and bong. Damn the smoke from the exhaust pipes. Bosse who went behind the vehicle to warn the audience completely disappeared in the smoke.

the first time they lit off the engine:

In 1931 Henry Ford considered a plan to build a major Ford manufacturing plant in Italy, actively encouraged by Mussolini. Fiat seemed to have had the power to stop that though

Historically significant, the 1901 Isotta Fraschini is chassis number one, the very first car to wear the famous ‘IF’ badge. At that time the Milan-based company, which had been started by Cesare Isotta and brothers Vincenzo, Antonio and Oreste Fraschini, assembled and sold Renault cars in Italy.

As part of the incentives offered, Mussolini “encouraged” Isotto Fraschini to donate the first car they produced to Ford’s museum (opened in 1929).

As soon as Fiat got wind of this plan to install one of their major rivals in Italy the scheme was halted in its tracks.

The car sat in the Ford museum until Italy declared war on the USA following Pearl Harbor. It was removed from display and lost in a storage unit for over half a century, and finally sold in the 1980s.

In 2014, however, it was bought by an Italian collector who made sure the chassis came home after 83 years away. Aside from getting the engine to run after decades of silence, the car has not been restored in any way. It remains a rolling chassis and wears ‘the coat of time’ according to its owner.

So that it can be driven on the Run, however, it has been fitted with a pair of wicker seats mounted on a removable frame allowing it to be quickly returned to its original state. Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Veteran Car Run Steering Group, said: ‘This is a truly remarkable machine. The very first Isotta Fraschini ever built, it is exactly as it left the factory 114 years ago. It has never before been seen in the UK, so its appearance on this year’s Run is something very special indeed.’

1912 Isotta Fraschini KM, 700 cu in 4 cylinder

I'm impressed by the aerodynamic mod to the single headlight, and the horn. The v shaped radiator might have been for this reason, or to simply increase the surface area for cooling, over what can be achieved with the same height and width flat radiator

I love finding the dealership tags on the dashboards, very rare
