Yes they were made to look woody without the wood, but there were some deluxe models that went further and were painted to look like woodies, and some with wicker pattern between the beams. Very classy looking they were. Fancy SUV's before anyone thought of the classification, one once saw a fair number of them on country estates and horse farms and the like in affluent parts of New England.
