compliment of the day

"Love your site, but you are always a dick."

which was a reply to my comment
"I haven't compared them. Just because GM made Chevy and Pontiac cars that were nearly identical, and Ford and Mercurys were nearly identical, and Plymouth and Dodge, etc etc... are you proposing we not recognize them as different? That's just crazy"

which was what I said when he commented:
"Change the stickon emblems and you have an El Camino, there isn't a whit of difference otherwise is there?"

which was his comment about the GMC Caballero when I replied to his comment about wanting the "El Camino" I posted, when I pointed out it's obviously not an El Camino "that is not an El Camino. It's a GMC, says so right on the tailgate. So, if I recall correctly, from 1971 to 77, it's a Sprint. Between 1978 and 1987 it's a Caballero, with one of the 3 packages: Diablo, Laredo, and Amarillo packages."

So, summed up, he thinks I'm a dick for correcting him, because he was generalizing when looking at the GMC version of the EL Camino, but he still loves my work on my site.

Well then, I leave it for you to decide, was I merely being conversant, or being a dick?

  1. Compared to some of your responses, this one was pretty mild. If this guy has been around long enough to think you are a dick, he should know better than to challenge you on your own blog.

And I agree that we should recognize the different makes and models, like you did. I'm not an expert on those models, but I expect there are some differences in interior trim, engine options, etc between the GMC and Chevrolet. A Blazer and Jimmy of the same period are also essentially the same, but I would recognize the difference because the GMC models are less well known.

I hope you agree, that some people have really asked for it, full force, both barrels, extra grains of black powder

  4. Your readers should know that you are knowledgeable about the content of this site. After all, it is your site. However, having to make a point of pubicially calling out someone else's mistake to show us how much you know, that, IMO, is a dick move. We all had that teacher in school that would call us out to intentionally make us look and feel stupid, and nobody liked that, either

    1. You seem to have, in my point of view, gotten a lot wrong.
1st, I got a compliment, and posted it. I was also called a dick. So I explained why.
That's not calling someone out someone's mistake, he claims he's right, and I pointed out to him in the comments on that post, that it makes a tiny bit of difference to call a vehicle by the correct name.
I didn't call him out to make him look stupid, he insists he's not wrong, and that it makes no difference what he calls it because an Elk is the same as a Cabbie.
      Now, that is stupid.
And I guess he ought to know that I'm a bit knowledgeable, but maybe he doesn't because I don't get into cars very much anymore, like, the info about them.
But he shouldn't waste his time arguing about if a GMC is an El Camino, that is stupid.
Now, the case up for deliberation is if I'm "always a dick"
OR, when someone calls me a dick, do I nicely point out that I was given a compliment.
      You decide.
Also, if after being called a dick, I make a point of showing what an idiot someone is, after they provoked me, isn't that just civilized?

    2. I get your point. I made the mistake, at 15, of saying that GMC didn't rebrand the El Camino to a good friend who had just been hired as a mech. apprentice at a Pontiac/GMC store. Lesson learned. My point is(if I have one), is do you dress someone down publicly to make them more informed, or is it self-serving? As we used to say in the Navy, It's your rice bowl. IMO, you want to enlighten? Do it publicly, then dress them down privately. Don't take the bait. Or not. It's your rice bowl.

      Did I dress him down?
I asked, after posting every word of the public conversation held in the comment section of that other post, was I merely being conversant, or being a dick?

    4. this post, not these follow up comments, was me reacting to being told I'm always a dick. You take that criticism, then tell me, how did you react?

  5. Too judgmental. I enjoy your remarks whether I agree or not. Long live Freedom of Speech! You also bring important news to the fore that we would otherwise not know.
