Simmons was a “caring” dad with a “boisterous, loud voice” always ready with a joke, said his girlfriend, Esther Crider. He worked in concrete and asphalt as a member of Local 292, a laborers union, Crider said.

47-year-old Simmons had a day off Friday. After helping Crider’s parents install an oven, he picked his daughters up at day care in Mukilteo before boarding the ferry to Whidbey Island.

The three stopped for snacks at a convenience store and were driving home to Langley when the car went off the road, Crider said.

Simmons of Langley, Washington was driving his Sentra but then for reasons unknown (probably slippery cold road) his car flew off the road, at least 100 feet off the road down a steep 20- foot embankment, and slammed into multiple trees before stopping.

The twins in car seats saw that their dad was hurt badly. They managed to get out of their booster seats and crawl through a broken window in the back of the car. Through the dark, dense forest they climbed up the steep embankment to look for help. Family members say the girls climbed about 200 feet up to the road after the accident 34 miles north of Seattle.

They were spotted by a driver who called 911 and kept the twins warm in her car until police arrived. Trooper Heather Axtman says the girls were rushed to the hospital with minor injuries. Their father died at the scene.
