What was "The Pineapple Air Force" you ask? It would be the force that met the Japanese on their attack of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, which was re-designated as the 7th Air Force.
They were held back once the war started at Oahu, to prevent any further attacks by the Japanese. But they never came... so the pilots complained that they were "left guarding the pineapples".

It describes, with photos, a WWII fighter group that my Dad was in. It fought in the Pacific, eventually escorting B-29's to the Japanese home islands.
It also describes a March 1945 kamakazi attack on the fighter pilots' bivouac area on Iwo Jima by hundreds of suicidal Japanese soldiers. My Dad survived that.
For the rest of his life he never slept in a tent without a weapon by his side. I kid you not.
